There is a convergence repair kit for the problem you are describing to me. It is for your specific Hitachi TV. Here is the link to it. Hope this helps, Mark

Look to the owner manual if you have it as it will likely have the answer you need--if no manual Google the model number with "manual" to try to locate the owner manual---if get or have it read it carefully as it sounds like to me the parental lock is on or something similar to it.
When you have just the cables as you describe, you are using composite inputs. By default, yellow is video, red is right audio, and white is left audio.
Go to menu on your remote control and select picture setting and try selecting "default" setting to seeif you like the color, if not adjust contrast to about two thirds of the way and brightness to your liking and color to about the middle.
I've had this problem as well. It occurred because somehow the Media Type was set to non-continuous with continuous media loaded.Simply changed the setting back to continuous and everything was fine.
one of the fans is not starting up causing the error check youself or have a tech check it out for you common thing when the set has been unpluged and really cools down
either the disc ur inserting is dirty or the laser needs cleaning try cleaning ur laser first then the disc if the problem prosist take the dvd player back
