The problem is in the idler assembly that runs the machine, in your case you have partial control. The problem is in the third wheel that has a rubber belt around it, the belt developes a glaze look cauing it slip when it comes in contact with the play function, to correct this! a cleaning attempt can be done, but in truth I would get a service technician, he will want to change one or two parts to rectify the situation especially when the machine must be reliable.
Hello I have a solution for this Press Ok, Accept or replay so we may get started My name is Bruce
working solution now
The play button is famous for wearing out before any other button. Fastest way to fix this is to spray compressed air below the button rest point to remove any and all debris build up. If you still experience problems please follow up

Hello on a BM-147 there is only one adjustment responsible
for auto back space when you used foot pedal and that adjustment is next to the Display is
call Reverse Time that controls the reverse function when you take foot control
off from play but if the problem is when you take the foot off on REW and unit
keeps going you have a bad foot pedal you can get a replacement at http://www.tvps.com/Products/ECS-Sony-IN-75-Heavy-Duty-Foot-Pedal---Pre-Owned__ECS-PIN-75.aspx
