The screen is patchy, there no picture just sound on the [ AV 1 ] channel from my dvd player. And on the componet channel there no sound but patchy colors that as far as i can tell make no corrolation to what my Xbox should be putting out. My brother was told that the plasma needs to warm up.

Red = right sound channel, white = left sound channel and yellow = video (picture) channel. if you have the connections matching these on the tv, then there should be an AV channel on the remote/tv control panel. Select this channel to view, if more than one AV channel on the tv, there will be a number next to the sockets you plugged into. Select the AV number and away you go. If your tv doesn't have the correct sockets you can buy a converter to use the ariel socket on the tv.
If Progressive scan is turn on the player and not on the tv it wont show a picture, or it could be your tv doesn't have progressive can, or check your AV cables, if through componet you have to make sure your tv is on the componet channel and that the colors all match and are inserted fully into the jacks.
the difference between tv and av, is that av has no showers on the screen. if you change to av you will notice a blue screen, connect your yellow on vedio output and white/ red on audio out of tv
note- before connecting to a vedio touch a tip of your vedio cable some lines will show on your screen, if touch your audio tip harming noise will sound on your tv. if this two happens then you know that your cables are okey. hold your channel button on your tv, channel will start runing after all rf channels finish, tv will go to av.
check the cables from the DVD to the VHS to the TV (I am assuming that the sound is likewise connected to the TV and not to a home receiver system or an amplifier);
I am assuming again that you are using RCA and not RF, if yes pls pay special attention to the yellow RCA on both the DVD to VHS and VHS to TV;
diagonal roll often indicates a loose ground or a defective cable/RCA connector;
verify settings/configurations in all three; DVD, VHS, TV. TV should be set to AV or Video, VHS likewise to A/V INput;
try playing a known good VHS tape, if normal playback, problem is between DVD and VHS, if likewise no video, problem is between VHS and TV.
Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.
Good luck and kind regards. Thank you for using FixYa.

Usually "ROOT" is an indication that the player has read the DVD.
ROOT means that the DVD is in the main menu screen.
Sounds like the DVD player is ok, but you may have a loose connection somewhere.
Check all of your AV connections between the TV and DVD.
Also make sure that the TV is set to the same AV channel as the connection you are using.
E.G. if you have connected the DVD to the AV 1 socket of the TV, make sure that the TV is set to channel AV 1.
Try the reset on the remote. Press this key twice to restore factory settings. The TV will automatically start Channel Search and clear all customized settings. These features will automatically reset:
? Picture/Sound Adjustments: Color, Tint, Contrast, Brightness, Sharpness, Color Enhancer, Tone, and Surround Sound
? Channel Memory
? Audio to Stereo
? Caption to OFF
? V-Guide to OFF
? Aspect Ratio to 4:3 (normal)
? Menu Language to English ? Sleep Timer (if previously set)
? Video to TV (if previously set) If desired, personal settings can be made again using the menu options
how many av inputs do you have on that tv? is it more than one? make sure you choose the right input. if that is not the problem then you are having a problem with av section in the tv
I suggest that you take it to a repair man to get it fixed or you can use the RF cable to connect it to your tv. it is not the best but is saloution to the problem..good luck
