Yes you can use dubbing if leather you can also use saddle soap to clean hope this helps

1. check right (supported) sort of cd's you say rw is ok, check type!
2. such old model possibly has wear-out on laser or else
3. lots of dust inside; use @ least cleaning - cd... or equivalent;
