What is Ariens ST 350 engine? A 2 stroke or 4 stroke engine?

It's a four stroke, the engine takes 5w-20 engine oil. Just Google it, there's free manuals online....

My Ariens 1540 will not go anywhere. Engine starts and runs fine but suddenly pushing the steering levers does not make it go. Just got it from a person that says one of the Hydraulic units overheats and...

hi there rermortimer

have you made sure the bypass levers on box hyrdo boxs are disengaged ( that is in the drive mode ) not push / free wheel mode

here is web site to download a owners manual

http://lawnandgarden.manualsonline.com/manuals/mfg/ariens/915055_1944_915057_2148_915059_2352_915065_1540_915067_1740_915501_1844_915502_1540.html

in the manual it shows the levers at the rear of machine

it is possible that the units may have o/heated and dropped there additive pack and or the belt that drives the hydro boxs is slipping , check that the box has correct amount of oil and have no air entrained in the oil , ( if it does cavatation is highly possible ) especially if oil has got quite low
alot of heat can be generated from this condition and can damage the pump and motor units in the hydro boxs!!

cavatation sounds quite noisy , makes a knocky / rattley/ rumbly noise , vibration can be felt
in the drive system as air bubbles explode in the oil and is quite damaging to hydro units in itself

may need to drain and refill both units with top quality synthetic type oil which will handle tempreture better , then purge air from units but check simple things 1st

have a look let me know

Lawn mower does not like to go up small hills, is there a filter or a place to check the fluid level

It probably doesn't have a factory filter, but I feel ALL small engines should have. The only fluids to check would be the engine oil and maybe the tranmission lube in the little gearbox (if it is self propelled). I don't know how STEEP the hills you mention are, but if too steep, gas flow and oil cirulation will be affected. Try going up the hill at an angle to reduce the problem.
If there is no dipstick tube on the engine to check the oil level, then look for a little yellow cap at the bottom of the engine right above the deck. It is threaded and twists on and off the engine. I think it is made of nylon.Your oil should always be clean, never black. When it starts getting dirty, change it. Most small lawn mowers hold 20 ounces of engine oil (about 2/3 of a quart).

What is the oil capacity on a 19.5 hp ariens riding mower? thank you

This can vary depending on whether or not the engine is equipped with an oil filter. You should have some type of dipstick that will tell you the oil lever. Most engines this size carry about 48 oz.

What type oil for ariens st824 do I use?

Check your owners manual for the recommended grade of oil. If you don't have the owners manual, use SAE 30 weight. I prefer Castrol myself. It keeps crude build-ups down. Here is the site to download the manual. Just enter your serial number.
