If I understand your setup correctly, the cable is necessary.
The most common setup is:
1. An internet cable (either phone line or coaxial cable) coming into your home/business from outside of the building, plugged directly into a broadband modem.
2. An ethernet cable going from the modem to your wireless router.
3. Computers connecting wirelessly to the router.
In other words, the ethernet cable is necessary to supply internet to the router. The router then broadcasts the signal to other devices like PCs, iPads, video game systems, etc. Come to think of it, it's kind of funny that we call it a wireless router!
You need to go into the router settings and turn the wireless on and then it will work

The Ethernet cable HAS to be connected to the router from the modem- how else would it receive a signal?
