Archos 504 the player starts with HDD recovery screen.

This is a recovery mode, and this menu allows you to:

 

-Format your hard drive
-Restore your system

 

In case of repair disk is selected :

 

For the first step you have to go on our website, and download the latest firmware update for your product.

 

Plug your Archos 504/604 on the computer and copy the firmware previously downloaded at the root of your device.

 

Disconnect your device as usual, and select done on the screen.

Did you try flashing the firmware on the unit?

if you can use 10gb of your hardisk its means its not totally broken... first make sure theres no partition of your hdd... because hdd can split into 2 or 3 or more...example the first partition is 10 gb and the second partition is 50 gb and the ramaining partition is 100gb... try to format your hdd in... first click start right click my computer choose the manage and computer management will apear then click the disk management and it will show if your HDD is have partinion that no have drive letter just right click it and you can rename it or delete... or you can reformat it...

• go to support and account near top of your screen and go to downloads
• the archos website should tell you what to do next

i need backup file Archos504

hold the tv button slightly earlier than holding the power button, first tv then power (while still pressing the tv button). it should first boot up to a normal green ARCHOS screen, then it will enter the recovery mode.

solution found!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! thank you so much for the support of the Archos team. here is what i did to repair my 504
if your "reset" button doesn't help at all, this is what you'll do.

If you power on the unit by pressing and holding the TV/LCD button and power
button simultaneously the unit will boot into a recovery screen. Once in this
screen choose "Repair Disk" and follow the on screen instructions.

When prompted, please place the following file into the 'root directory' of
the unit:

http://update.archos.com/4/a504/a504_r1.6.53/a504.aos

before i found this solution, i've already given up on my 504, but now it's back!!!! REBIRTH!!!

I had the same problem and manage to solve it. You need to do the following

a. go to Archos website and download latest firmware and save on your pc
b. turn on 504 and select repair - unit not connected to pcm you will see a screen where you wil be prompted to press DONE (but DONT press it yet!!!!)
c. connect 504 to pc and wait until pc recognise it (it will recognize it this time)
d. copy firmware from pc and paste it to 504 root directory.
e. press done on 504. now when the device restarts you just select Repair and that should work. :)

open the battery pack, and push the hard drive back into it's slot.

it has prongs that attach, tat was always my problem.
