It depends on the modem... If it is a voice modem, yes. You would only need a program that would let you do it. I can't remember the name of the program I used years ago, but it worked as an answering machine, too. I even used a voice modification software with it and freaked some people out!

My uniden DECT 6.0 telephone when plugged in constantly rings. I can't find anything in the manual on how to fix this.

The problem sounds like a wiring fault to me. Landlines ring when the POTS (plain old telephone system) provides power on the receive wire. See https://www.lanshack.com/wire_phone_jack.aspx for the RJ-11 wiring diagram.

Try a different phone at the jack and a different telephone cord. If it rings constantly, that tells you the problem is with the wiring in the building or outside. You need to find where additional electricity is coming into the telephone wiring. Check the jack first. Most jacks either have screw terminals or keystones. Use the wiring diagram above to make sure that the wires are connected to the correct point. If you have the screw type of terminal, you need to strip the insulation from the conductors before securing the wires. For the keystones, leave the insulation intact. Then use a punch-down tool (available at most hardware stores in the electrical section) to push the wire into the correct slot in the keystone.

There must be a place where the insulation is damaged and touching another wire or water is in contact with bare metal and a current is flowing across the water. If only the Uniden phone rings constantly even with the new RJ-11 cable, replace the phone.

I hope this helps.

Fax says it is off hook, what should I do?

The fax machine can't detect a dial tone (from a POST line). Since the Pixma MX420 doesn't have a handset, you may need another telephone to check your line. First, make sure that the telephone cord to the wall jack is connected to the RJ-11 port marked L. This is the lower of the two ports on the all-in-one printer. If the cord is in the wrong spot, swap the connection. That could solve the issue. If you have a telephone plugged into the upper RJ-11 port, check if you hear a dial tone. (Connect your test phone here if you haven't had one connected and check for the dial tone.)

Next, unplug the RJ-11 line cord and plug it directly into your test phone. Do you hear a dial tone? If you do not hear a dial tone, try a different RJ-11 cable. If the problem is solved, connect this cord to the lower port on the MX420 and see if the fax continues to give the "offline" message. If you still have no dial tone, take your test phone to another jack and try again. Find your incoming phone service box and check if that has a RJ-11 jack. If it does, you can test for a dial tone there. If the box doesn't have a RJ-11 port, you can have your telephone provider check the service.

If there is no dial tone at the service box, then your telephone company will fix the external problem for free. (With copper telephone service, sometimes rodents damage the wires. The provider has to fix this.) If you had a dial tone at the service box or another jack, then you have an internal wiring problem. This could be at the jack or inside a wall. If you take off the outlet cover, you'll find the wiring for the jack. This will either have screws holding down the stripped ends of the conductor wires or a punch-down keystone (with un-stripped wires). For the jack with the screw terminals, determine if any wire is loose/broken and strip a new section of wire. Then re-secure the wire under the correct screw. See http://www.lanshack.com/wire_phone_jack.aspx for a diagram. For the punch-down keystone, you'll need a special tool to reconnect the conductor wire. This tool is available at most hardware stores in the electrical wiring section.

If the problem isn't at a jack, you'll have to try to find the broken wire and replace the wire. Your telephone company's service technician will fix the problem for a fee.

If you have an internet connection with a DSL filter, you should check if the filter is damaged. This can lead to the above problems. If you have switched to a VOIP service, you'll need to make sure that it is compatible with the POST connection for the fax machine.

I hope this helps.

How can send a fax?

You have to connect your landline telephone line to your device. There should be a small port at the back. I hope you know what it looks like... in this age of mobiles! lol.

Its called an RJ-11 connector. If the device didnt come with an extra lead, unplug your telephone and connect the device to check it out. then you have to dial a fax number, wait for a fax tone, and facsimile :)

What jack does the Slingbox Ethernet cable hook into on a ATT 2wire modem? I have a choice of DSL or one like the phones are hooked into. It's not working now so I'm backing up each step, no matter...

Before you change anything - is this a new device you are hooking up or had this thing worked in the past? First thing to do is reboot everything starting with the modem and ending with the computer at the end of the line. Wait at least 30 seconds between each device. Review all the connections - everything plugged in where it should be? (this is of course your question - see more below).

Eithernet connections (plugs) are RJ-45. The RJ-45 looks like a RJ-11 (telephone jack) only bigger. Typically, the RJ-45 will not fit into the RJ-11 AND SHOULD NOT. Why? Your Cat 5 eithernet runs on very low voltage and signal (packet switching). If you succedssfully get the RJ-45 CAT 5 cable into the RJ-11 phone jack, when the phone rings, you will be sending 60 volts into your network. Can you spell "Do I smell smoke?" A RJ-11 will have up to 6 wires (one pair or two pair or three pair) in the jack and up to 6 'buds' on the RJ-11 plug. A RJ-45 will have 8 wires (in the jack) and 8 'buds' on the plug of your cat 5.

Your device may say DSL on the Cat 5 connection - count the wires inside or the jack.

There are other Cat 5 connection types, punch down and terminal screw types, I dont think you are talking about either.

On your AT&T modem, you should find a RJ-11 which will attach to a near by telephone jack and a RJ-45 for your Cat 5 cable. Your modem may also serve as a router and as such would have additional RJ-45 ports. I suspect you are using a separate router for your home network. As such, one of the ports on the router should be marked Internet or Upload or maybe it is a special color or is set aside from the other ports. That special port will be connected to your modem and your other computers will use the other, lesser ports.

Of course, you could call your service provider for clarification also.

Thank you for your question @ FixYa.com - I am sorry you are having this trouble and I hope I have helped you in some way. I hope you are able to get your system back up in short order.

I have the GXV-3000 IP Video phone, there is a RJ11 jack on the back. How do I use the interface? Connect to my phone line from ATT or connect to a regular phone (as an extention?)? Thanks.

A copy of the user manual for your IP phone is found here: http://www.grandstream.com/user_manuals/GXV3000_User_Manual.pdf

I have browsed through and found no mention of an RJ-11 port on the back, only two RJ-45 Network ports, one for connecting to a PC in switch mode and one for ethernet mode.

If your phone is different and DOES have an RJ-11 port (as some IP phones do), I can only assume it is to connect to a landline to offer landline services as well as IP services.

Under those circumstances of course DO NOT attempt to plug in your landline RJ-11 into an RJ-45, it will not work and you risk shorting something out.

Connecting laptop hardwire from router, the notebook won't acknowledge that it is connected.

Is this XP or Vista or 7? You are silent as to the OS, the computer and the router - making it difficult to narrow down the possibilities.

Have you run the wizard to setup a home of small office network?

Have your run your router's software?

Have you indeed connected your computer to your router using 8 conductor Cat 5 ethernet wire?

You are pluged into a RJ-45 outlet in your computer not the RJ-11 modem connection?

RJ-11 with telephone wire will fit into a RJ-45 outlet but it will not work.

Be advised that if you plug a phone wire into your NIC (Network Interfact Card) and the other end into your telephone jack, when the phone rings, that wire will shoot 60 volts into your computer ... there will be the smell of fried components, the sound of gnashing teeth and the sound of a sash register in your future..

T636400000 does it have an ethernet card built in the unit?

You are probably looking at a RJ-11, used for telephone (dial up - modem). You are trying to put a RJ-45 connector in it.

The RJ-45 should have 8 wires while the RJ-11 may have as many as 6 connectors.

Thank you for your voluntary work with this organization.

Note: If you were to plug a RJ-11 into a RJ-45 port and if it happened that you plugged the other end of the phone cord (RJ-11) into a phone jack --- and the phone were to ring ... you would be pumping 60 volts into your computer. Be very careful with these connections. You would then need butter and jelly for your toast, which is what your computer would be.

Ok - recap: Both look very similar ...

Ethernet = 8 conductors - RJ-45

Telephone = up to 6 wires (may be 2 or 4 also) - RJ-11. NOT interchangable.

So how will you connect? If the laptop is not builltin wireless, you can get a PCMIA card for the slot on the side that will allow wireless or ethernet. Get the card at your computer store. ... Or ... use the built in modem for dialup., You would of course need a dialup account somewhere.

Does it make a difference if i use a wire splitter? does it make a difference of the order the phone pins are connected in the wire splitter?

What are you doing? Are we talking about telephones (RJ-11) or are we talking about routers and ethernet cable (RJ-45)?????

RJ-11 will fit into a RJ-45 but a RJ-45 will not fit into a RJ-11. Translation, your telephone wire will plug into your router/computer port but your Ethernet wire will not fit into your telephone jack.

If you are working on a telephone, as long as you have dial tone on the other end, it doesn't make a big difference. You should have a polarity checker to insure proper polarity but even if it is wrong, most phones will work most of the time. Get a polarity checker at Radio Shack for about $10.00

If you are working on a router ... well, it is no wonder your network will not work. You cannot split one RJ-45 port into two "Ports" using a telephone RJ-11 splitter. Never, Never, Never, plug your router cable into a telephone jack (RJ-11). Yea, Yea, Yea, I know, I just said a RJ-45 will not fit into a RJ-11 but if you have a telephone cord pluged into the router, guess what, 60 Volts will smoke it. When the phone rings, it rings with 60+ volts and will smoke any computer device it can smoke looking for ground.

If you need more computer ports, get a bigger router or bigger switch or bigger hub or get a wireless router to accomodate your wireless devices.

I hope I have answered your question.
