If you need a larger hard drive other hardware might need to be upgraded to cope with the bigger hard drive although newer computers should be able to cope with a bigger hard drive.

Old computer with windows xp won't boot - how can I get the data off the hard drive by hooking it up to my new computer with windows vista?

You should be able to put the old hard drive in the new computer and connect it as a secondary drive. That all depends on the type of interface the new computer is using. Most new computers use SATA inferface for HDD now. You're old drive might be IDE. in which case you can't add it to new computer unless it also has IDE interface on new MB. If no IDE interface on new MB, you can use USB 2.0 to IDE or Serial ATA Drive Adapter Cable from Cablestogo.com to connect your old drive via USB.
