The heating element burned through -- it needs replacing. Turn off power to oven, remove two screws on heating element mount, pull heating element from wall of oven, remove two screws connecting electric leads to heating element. To install new element, reverse steps. Make sure screws connecting heating element to wires are very tight -- otherwise they will arc.

SOURCE: baking element replaced but still won't heat

you may have triped half your 220v breaker. (you should have shut it off when reparieng wire or it would have been live and zaped you) Or something in line with the wire that shorted blew out like a fuse in the range.

Lower heating element of oven does not heat at all. Think we saw it sparking before it quit working, not sure why it would do that. Oven is very clean, nothing on walls or on element. Was recently cleaned...

The element sparking and short circuiting has nothing to do with the cleanliness of the oven. An element will break down internally and short circuit due to it's age or hours of service. Have a look at the element to see if there are any holes/blow marks on it. If there are it requires replacement. Sometimes the element will look fine but will still be faulty.

When oven is on spark inside oven

"Sparking inside oven" -- sounds like you might have an electric oven?

If so-- perhaps there is a screw or bolt that is loose on the big heating element-- Can you wiggle it, with maybe a stick?-- and see if it is loose?-- and tighten it?--
If it has broken-- likely you will have to get a new heating element.

Question where did spark come from. Is element broken? If came out of back connection then connect and element should be replaced, If element is worn or broken then replace element, easy to fix yourself, just make sure you disconnect power for safety.

The oven is completely off, but the broiler is heating up. I noticed the back left corner of the element was bright orange. The oven is unplugged right now.

Check if an insulator of the element is broken.

If the element is of the "Calrod" tube type, then the element has internal failure. Remove and replace the element.

The element probably has a grounding within the tube keeping the power on a section of it.

Low temp causes heating coil to spark and leave white residue

You need a new heating element fitting.
Do not use it until it is fixed.
The white powder is from the inside of the element.
