It sounds like it might just be a case of the button being stuck. The ESC shouldn't turn on just from you plugging in the battery, you're supposed to have to press the button once the battery's connected to power up the ESC.
You can send it back to Traxxas and they will repair it for $15 plus $5 shipping/handling if there is no signs of abuse. A new xl-1 esc is $60 from Traxxas.
I have a Rustler vxl and the same thing happened to me. Have you tried re-programming the controller to the car. look in your manual and you should see that the throttle must be programed for full extension for the brake and full compression for the "give it the gas". it has to do with the speed controller on how to get it set right.
The ESC (electronic speed control) is what the battery and motor are connected to. It gets the signal from the receiver and controls the power to the motor. If the motor revs I would check: 1) Make sure set screw is tight on pinion gear on motor. 2) Check gear mesh between pinion and spur gears. 3) Check slipper clutch to make sure it is not too loose, it should only slip for about 12-18 inches when you pull full throttle from a stop. I hope this helps, I will try to answer any questions that I can.
