Not sure how you are downloading the pictures to the computer but starting from scratch check the SD card to make sure the lock is in the "open" position here is a diagram for that. It doesn't matter that it has Kodak on it, I took this as a screen shot and wrote on it to show the unlock position of that annoying little switch. see more below diagram
Make sure the pictures have been downloaded to the computer at this point as the lock would have prevented this from happening. Now what you need to do is format the card not delete format. The manual I have is a reference check your manual for this procedure. Formatting should be done each time you download pictures to the computer, new memory cards or taking one memory card from one camera and putting it in another. Format, Format and yes format Cheers for now

same thing has happened to me, only bottom half of the picture displayed and same message comes up. It looks like my best bet is to talk to Nikon about it. Thank you.

I had exactly the same problem, i tried everything, battery out, sd card out , lens off etc...nothing worked.Completely by chance and irritation i repeatedly pressed the shutter butten over and over
( without the lens attached ) till it didn't react at all.On my LCD i got a normal menu so i put the lens on and bingo it was fixed, still works fine.I think maybe the shutter was out of alignment.
Hope this works for you.

Hello. Make sure the write-protect switch on the SD card is in the UP (nearer to the contacts) position. Try the card in an SDHC capable reader on your computer first. Note that the SD card can only be inserted one way - make sure you're not putting it in upside-down! If the computer recognizes the presence of inserted card (whether it can read it or not), format it at FAT32. When finished, remove properly (icon in system tray) and insert into your D40 slot, WITH THE CAMERA OFF!! Turn on the D40, and if it now recognizes the SD card, FORMAT it again, in the camera. Good luck.

try pressing the 2 green buttons to reset the unit . if you get lucky and it turns on, immediately follow the steps to update your firmware on this website http://ampin.wordpress.com/2007/03/02/nikon-d40-firmware-upgrade/ , otherwise you will need to take the camera to an authorized repair center . :)
