If the resistor in question is directly on the positive input line from the DC power supply, it is likely that the laptop will operate perfectly normally without it. Simply jumper the connection. Laptops can handle extremely large variances in power without fault. The idea that a resistor would be used to step up or down the voltage fore the main input is crazy anyway, so it is more likely a diode or a fuse. I cannot say for sure without an image of the motherboard and component in question, but it sounds like something you could just jump without much cause for alarm.
It may be a diode. My first attempt at repairing it I jumped the port to the wrong side and had no voltage to the board so I know it won't work without it.
Perhaps you could take a picture of it and post it somewhere that I can see it?
