If the motor comes on then either the shaft connection at the fan is loose or the belt to the beater bar is bad.

Please check the suction on your machine? Is it strong? It may be that you have a clog, particularly since you have dogs, cats and children!

It suction is fine, have you checked the rotating roller brush? If the point of pickup is poor on your floors, you may need to check your belt. You may have picked up a large object that has affected the tension in the belt. Sounds like you have hair,strings,debris caught on the beater bar and it is causing the belt to burn on the beater bar or motor.
Remove the bottom of your vacuum and clean,oil and replace the beater bar, that should solve your burning smell problem.

You've probably figured this out, but my luv200R had the same problem. The belt broke, I changed it and it still didn't spin the brushes. Turned out, the roller has bearings on either end and one of the bearings was bad and wasn't letting roller roll. So the pulley would spin against the belt and heat up and break it again. I took the bad roller to Sears where they had a new one sent to my house free of charge since it was less than a year old.
