You can adjust the brightness on the back of the set which says screen. put a mirror so you can see the screen and slowly turn the screw clockwise until you can see the picture.

First pull back Look for screen and focus block you will have 3 controls ontop for focus and 3 controls below for adjusting screen drive to each Tube R/G/B
turn color off on Menu NOW try to Adjust the red, greenand blue screen drives as close asyou can to a Black and White picture then turn Color back on in Menu also adjust Focus for each Tube Be sure to Clean Top of Tube Lenses of dust&dirt Just in case Post me your Model and Chassis Number it will be on back of TV some RCA Focus&screen drive Block maybe in front of TV if so remove front bottom panel their you will see control box.
If it is a square box, it is usually a text box. It can be fixed by turning closed captioning off. Either hit the CC button on the remote until off appears. Or go in to the menu find closed captioning or text and turn off. If it is not a defined box, it could be something inside the tv.
Rca Screen ControlThese sets have screen control adjustment usually located behind the speaker grill(pops off -velcro or press tabs) and convergence front board. There are 6 contols on a black molded assembly about 31/2"x21/2" square. adjust only the top controls marked "Screen R G B" the bottom ones are focus Method: -turn on set and let warm up for 30 min at least -switch tv to blank unused video input channel -adjust each control in turn until you see the picture glow (with the corresponding color) and slightly back off the control - repeat for each color - this will increase screen brightness and ballance your color Hope this helped.
Sounds like a bad screen asy, part number 204809,must use the generic,or you could have weak tubes,if so you may just need to turn up the screen drives, this part is located in the right top of the set with the back removed,if no cracks are present adj. the three marked screen's,turn the color all the way down in your menu and adj. for a black and white picture.
i dont know this exact model, but i can advice you based on a slightly diffrent model. i hope the solution will be valid for your model as well:
TV is digital controlled and have to be adjusted via service menu
except the external focus and screen on back of (flyback) high voltage transformer.
This is one you can try: Need plastic allen or plastic small flat
blade screwdriver to fit these. Focus is top, bottom is the screen
that set the overall brightness. Before adjusting, go in menu: press menu once, select picture quality, I think number 4, press 2 for "preset..", press 2 again to select normal. Back out by pressing zero repeatedly. It may ask you to save new settings, select yes.
If screen is adjusted too bright, picture look lousy (washed out) the blacks will light up (becomes grey, or visible lines) this means you have actual fault that prevents you to get decent pix, that when it is time to take it in for repair.
