I was having a problem with the door that holds the basket popping open and coffee going everywhere.
I have bought a new spring and removed the old one, however since the old one was broke I do not know how it latches to the machine.
Thanks,
Kent
The spring can be replaced if you can get a new one - however it does take a lot of patience to get it aligned properly. I have purposely disassembled my 500 to clean out the tracks and basket latch and have successfully reassembled. In fact, right now I'm waiting for the coffee to finish to enjoy a fresh cup (although, all be told, at this point I'd rather go grab a beer! ;-) ) The trick with replacing the spring is that it has two different ends - one with a hook that is horizontal to the coil of the spring; the other hook perpendicular to the coil. The horizontal hook goes around the back peg of the latch lever, with this leg being against the bottom side of the lever. The other hook is used to maintain the tension and is placed against the side body of the sliding shelf. When placing the spring into place the angle of separation between the two legs is approximately 15 degrees - note: the legs do NOT overlap (ie, go past each other - they maintain their respective sides). The trick that I learned was to continue to apply downward force on the latch lever, thus forcing the retension peg to be as fully exposed as possible. This reduces the very frustrating occurrence of the spring slipping off the peg when you try to reinstall the cover. BTW, we've had this grinder/brewer for many years and thoroughly enjoy it - except for when the tracks gunk up & the basket spits out in the middle of brewing.....
OMG Thank you Joe OCup! You are a life saver! I was having heart failure trying to get that dang spring back on the right way!

Get a replacement filter basket from the Cuisinart website - they run about $5 - $6. Saves the hassle of trying to fiddle with the springs, and solves the problem.
That is not the spring that the question refers to. The question is about the spring that pushes the side button out, which latches the filter basket door. There is no part you can buy that includes that spring - you would have to buy a new coffee maker.

My door keeps popping open during brewing...what a mess!

I have the same problem - I have taken apart my machine to clean it and do not know how the spring is supposed to go back into it's spot properly.
Any one figure out how the spring fits in under the filter basket assembly?
It is the spring for the button on side to release the filter basket.
It's not the basket springs that are the problem, it's the spring for the button on the side that pops open the basket... that spring needs to be put back in on my machine and I can't figure out which way it's supposed to go.
