MTX truck boxes, Pioneer 10" subs, Clarion 4" mids with tweeter retrofit

I have a set of (I believe) early 80's Mtx road thunder boxes , I have removed the blown subs and replaced with Pioneer 10" TS-W25-1R's.while the bass is good, I am noticing some distortion in the mids & highs. I have a set of Clarion SRC4694's that I would like to install in the place of the mids & horns. While I can handle the reconstruction of the boxes, I need a little help with the wiring compatibility. Is this configuration possible? If so, How do I go about wiring the MTX boxes for the Clarion retrofit?? Presently I am using an Audiovox Road Gear 80 watt amp, with a Sony GTX 710 head,looking to install a PPI PCX250 (old school). Also, I am running a seperately powered line to a Power Acoustics OV2-1250 powering two JL Audio (also old school)12" dual coil (not sure of power right off hand or model number) in a single 16"x16"x36"? box. My front speakers are Pioneer TS-A6963-R's that are powered off the stock Sony head. (looking to move the Audiovox Road Gear 80 to the front) . HELP!!

    anyone got any other info about this combo?? PLEASE !

  • tunalick Jul 16, 2008

    The PPI PCX250 will be powering the MTX's with the retrofit, so this is the setup I'm having problems with. I don't know the impedence on the Pioneers or the Clarions. Also i'm not sure what configuration would be correct for wiring. Thanks for any hel full info you could give.

I have 2 different subs in one box, a 12" MTX thunder and a 12" Kicker CVR. the kicker is a dual voice coil while the MTX I dont believe is. Can I use one amp for this set up? And how would it be wired?

im guessing both speakers are 4 ohms ..mtx 4ohms and kicker dual 4ohms..now if your amp can go down to 1 ohm wiring the kicker dual coils in parallel (2ohms) and the mtx connected together (4ohms) should leave you with a final impedance between 1 and 2 ohms ...i suggest you use one or get another

How big of hole do i need for the mtx 6000 thunder 10in

The MTX Thunder 6000 T61544A is a 15" Subwoofer meaning you will need a 15" hole to fit the subwoofer into. The mounting plate that surrounds the subwoofer will extend past 15" allowing you to screw the sub in properly. Be sure to use a box that is at least 12 inches deep (sub is 10 inches deep by specifications + 2 inches for good air cushion behind.

What is Positive and what is Negative

Hi Mason.
Are the positions colour coded in any way?
Red = Positive
Black = Negative
I've looked at some photo's from the website and at a guess I would say that yours are the push on crimp types, so no colour markings.
Have a look at the pdf wiring diagram they supply here as it may shed some light on things:
MTX Thunder US-XT12-44
I've looked over loads of forums but none seem to mention the wiring of these subs.
Understandably you want to get this right as they are a very nice set of subs when they're up and running.
If all else fails try looking at the MTX contact list and ringing one of their supported dealers for more info.

Mike

I have a mtx thunder 7801 and a sledge hammer box

Sounds like the subs are blown with the voicecoils fused together which means the amp is/was seeing a dead short ( zero Ohms reisitence) not good for any amp. Disconnect the speaker terminals from the amp and see if it turns on. The funny smell might have been the subs blowing up, i'll keep my fingers crossed for you.

MTX Thunder 81001 wont push subs

first of all you should check the minimal impedance your amp handles , if is class d it should handle between 1-2 ohms total impedance in a mono conection , meaning whatever quantity of subs you have hooked to your amplifier,their total impedance should the minimum the amp handles that way all the power from your amplifier will be used.
