Are you connecting with VGA etc cable. It (your Mac) should automatically sync. Also check input on projector, there's usually multiple input options

What might be the problem since my macbook pro is connected to the projector through a HDMI to VGA adapter, yet the screen remains black?

Vga and hdmi are different formats. Unless you are using a coverter box that translates the data from one format to another it won't work. Vga is analog and hdmi is digital

I connect it to my MacBook Pro using a USB cable but it doesn't communicate

You can't use a USB port for a projector, unless the video bit rate is extremely poor.

you will need to use hdmi, dvid, or thunderbolt

Can't run a DVD from my Apple Mac through my Acer Projector -

Depending on which Mac you have, you need an adapter. The latest Macbooks use a Mini DVI to video converter - you can get one from the Apple Store.
