Nikon Coolscan 5000 ED not scanning

I have an 18 month old Nikon Coolscan 5000 ED scanner. It worked well for a while, but is no longer working. I can enter a slide, press preview, and it does that fine. However, when I hit scan, it starts, then after 5 or 6 seconds it stops. The dialogue box "acquiring scan" remains open, but nothing happens (even after 10-15 minutes). I have tried reinstalling the software (same problem) and also checked to see if there is a more recent software upgrade available on the Nikon US site (there isn't).
I am using Windows XP Professional software.

This appears to have fixed the problem. The only change I had made was to select Kodachrome as the film type, but seemingly there is a problem with this after 20-30 scans.
    Many thanks.

Try reinstalling drivers from disk

    First disconnect scanner from usb.
then remove scanner from installed devices in windows control panel
At this point try reinstalling software, possibley the latest driver, if you are using Vista run the installation as administrator, or it will not work.

If you are using xp, you do not need a software upgrade , use software from disk following instructions above.
Connect scanner to usb only when required by software installation, or after reinstalling software.

Have you tried resetting the scanner itself?

Will not recognize 5th image on negative strip because 4 and 5 overlap (slight double exposure). How do I scan 5th image?

I inserted my negative holder in backwards on my Nikon 5000 35 mm scanner. Then I could get the last (5th) slide scanned. But I can not get the scanner to work on my new IMac because of no working driver. Silver Fast has no drivers for the Nikon 5000

Without changing any of my settings, my Coolscan 5000 has suddenly become very slow (10 minutes + per image, up from around 1 or 2 minutes). Does anyone have any idea why this might have happened and what...

You apparently updated your Mac and the update does not work with your Scan-software.Uninstall the software and remove everything that has to do with the scanner --- and reinstall the scan software.

Trying to install Nikon Super Coolscan 5000 ED, for some reason the installation disc doesn't have the LS-5000 ED driver software...? I am running Win Vista. Any ideas?

I do not believe Nikon made drivers specifically for Vista, but you can use the solution here to make your own driver "inf" file and install some that will work anyway. Please read this and carefully follow the directions. If you are using 32 bit, use the 32 bit drivers. If 64 bit, then 64 bit drivers, when creating the new inf.

Grey scanning color

Did you remove the previous driver/software from the other scanner? I suppose you have already tried uninstall/reinstall driver/software, Likely you should have the updated firmware if this is a current scanner. Also, you may want to try importing the scanner source from a different imaging program to see if it has to do with the manufacture software.
