I have an 18 month old Nikon Coolscan 5000 ED scanner. It worked well for a while, but is no longer working. I can enter a slide, press preview, and it does that fine. However, when I hit scan, it starts, then after 5 or 6 seconds it stops. The dialogue box "acquiring scan" remains open, but nothing happens (even after 10-15 minutes). I have tried reinstalling the software (same problem) and also checked to see if there is a more recent software upgrade available on the Nikon US site (there isn't).
I am using Windows XP Professional software.
Try reinstalling drivers from disk
First disconnect scanner from usb.
then remove scanner from installed devices in windows control panel
At this point try reinstalling software, possibley the latest driver, if you are using Vista run the installation as administrator, or it will not work.
If you are using xp, you do not need a software upgrade , use software from disk following instructions above.
Connect scanner to usb only when required by software installation, or after reinstalling software.

Have you tried resetting the scanner itself?

This appears to have fixed the problem. The only change I had made was to select Kodachrome as the film type, but seemingly there is a problem with this after 20-30 scans.
Many thanks.
