Hi, I bought this LG RC897T 2 years ago and have only used the DVD player about 60 times. I've bought original "US" TV Box set dvds and Chinese knock-offs, and wrote my own dvds and they all played back fine (and still do!). I recently bought the 7-yr TV series DVD box set for Star Trek- Deep Space nine ("Original" US version in very nice plastic holders from a US distributor). The first season's 6 DVDs - I can play 3 of them, but the other 3 just keep trying to read with the spinning disk in the upper left corner of the TV display. The 2nd year's 7 DVDs - can't read the first 6 and the 7th says "unknown disc format". BUT, I took the DVDs to 4 neighbors and they could all play ALL the discs just fine!!! (note: they were all Sony DVD players) I bought and tried a dvd lens cleaner and did a hard reset without any improvement. All DVD discs look in perfect condition with no cracks, etc. LG customer service had no other suggestions except to take it in for repair. Any thoughts? Something need re-calibrating? Probably worth fixing since it was a $350 item 2 years ago I seem to remember. THANX MUCH for any ideas / suggestions......mark

    UPDATE:

sigh.....there must be an incompatibility between the LG RC897T DVD/VCR/Tuner player and this "Paramount" Deep Space Nine TV box set. DS9 is NTSC 5.1 Region 1 and LG DVD player supports that. (even cleaned DVD lens, reset player, and hacked my player to be region free, no luck).
Of the 49 Deep Space Nine discs....I can read only 2 (used to be 3), 18 give "unknown disc format", and 29 just spin forever attempting to read.
Of MY 97 DVDs I can play them ALL......
(including another Paramount TV box set)
I don't know whether the problem lies in the DVD player or the discs......since my neighbors with their SONY DVD players can play ALL the first 13 discs I tried on their players. DVD player repair men I called couldn't help......neither could LG customer service...just said send it in for service. (but out of warranty). I posted a help on videohelp.com/forum...but no response
    any thoughts? Suggestions?
obviously it would be hassle to send it in and expensive when it may not even be fixable....
    thanx.....mark

    Joe,

if you check the "Comment" I had updated the original post with you'll see that 7 hours ago I had written that I had already hacked it to be region free with no luck......

It was set for region 1 when I hacked it.....besides I had bought it at a best buy in Camarillo, California 2 years ago. (they wouldn't sell non-region 1 DVD/VCR combo units that didn't play local DVDs)

    thanx anyway for your suggestion....mark

Hello Mark. Most likely your player is regionalized and not compatable ith those DVD's that won't play. To eliminate the regional setting on your player go to this link http://www.wisebread.com/make-your-dvd-player-region-free-in-seconds

It contains the step by step instructions on how to make your player region free. It also has an how to video and a full explanation of why the regionalization was installed in the first place. Joe

My unit is a DVP3140, purchased 2006 or 2007. As soon as I got it, I changed the code to region 0 so that I could play the DVDs I bought when I lived in Italy. It worked great for about 3.5 years of...

By changing to Region 0 you've changed the Laser control and subsequently the Laser is failing earlier than it would have done under normal operation.

The only solution would be to replace the Laser which is not normally cost effective and often unavailable anyway.

CDs may still play for a period of time as these require less power as there isn't as much information to read as a DVD.

it means that your tv has to be on channel 3 or 4 to use device. once your tv is on one of those channels, you should be able to program your dvd/vcr to record and check to see if there is a menu button on your controller. if it is a newer tv, try setting menu on component1, aux 1 or anything but tv..if there is a menu button on controller for dvd/vcr player select that once you see the home screen on tv...

Hi just got a LG dvd/vcr Model RC897T. I have it hocked up right, but i can't get it to switch over so that it would be seen on the TV. can you help

If a cable box is not required for cable signal reception, connect the cable line to the ANT. IN connector on the recorder.
If a cable box is required for cable signal reception, connect the cable line to the IN connector of the cable box. Connect a coaxial cable from the OUT connector of the cable box to the ANT. IN connector of the recorder.
To view or record a CATV channel:
  1. Tune the TV to the Recorder output channel (CH 3 or 4).
  2. Set the Recorder channel selector to the cable output channel. (Example: CH3).
  3. Select a channel using the cable converter.
With this connection, you cannot record one program while viewing another. If you are using a cable box to tune channels, it is not necessary to do Auto Channel Set.

Trying to play dvd but says wrong region soneynhv-dx350ab?

Hi, if its saying wrong region. then either your player or disk is incompatable. region 1 ntsc ( USA ) Region 2 ( UK ) et,c. check your players region coding is compatable for your country, and that you are also playing a dvd with the same region coding as the player. alternatively is to try and find a region free or multi-region solution. Need code for Viore TV to program LG RC897T DVD/VHS Recorder

I believe Viore is the same as Samsung. I only noticed this by accident as I bought a Viore TV and my friend bought a Samsung and I noticed both remotes were identical. I tried the Samsung codes and the remote worked. Good luck! Kevin
