I know you posted this a while ago but I had the same issue and I just figured out how to solve it. You hold down on the 'Reset' button so it shows the alarm time and then while continuing to hold the 'Reset' button you press the 'Start' button right above it. Each time you press the 'Start' button, you turn the alarm and the chime every hour on and off. You know if its 'on' based on the little images on the top of the screen. The top left corner is the alarm and the bottom right is the chime.
