The first possibility is that the new remote control is a dud out of the box. It can happen. Another possibility is that the remote sensor in the TV has failed. Then the remote is transmitting, but it's not being picked up by the TV. (The lights are on but there's nobody home.) If you can, return the new remote to the store and exchange it. Then, if the set still doesn't respond, you'll need to replace the remote sensor.
