This is caused by one of two things.
The first thing is that you might have accidentally activated the mute function and as a result, it cannot record the sound of the environment since the mic has been de-activated.
The second and most likely thing is that your mic is faulty and can also not record the sound in your environment.
You can try to restore the default settings and see if there is any change as the mic settings may have been altered but if it doesn't then you have to send it to an expert technician to help you change the mic.

I'd say it does record the sound but your camera doesn't have a speaker for playback. Download the clip, I'll bet the sound is there.
I had the same problem, my G12 recorded hi resolution videos but I could not hear any sound. I found out that I had muted the annoying camera sounds (beeps and clicks) and at the same time it muted ALL sounds (quite stupid from Canon).
After activating the camera beeps and sounds I also could hear the video sounds through my camera. The only problem is that my Quick Time version (7.0.4) for OSX 10.4 does not playback any of the sounds and the video seems too High Res for it too, it just keeps on jagging... and I don´t know what to do!
Could anyone have a good solution?
