There is a way to "reset" the camera to the factory defaults. this will get it working . turn on the camera, there are two "green dots" near buttons on the camera. one is near the on-off switch, the other is on the lower left back of the camera. after the camera is turned on, press and hold both of the green dot buttons together for a few seconds. release the buttons, most of the cameras controls will now be reset. turn the know on the top right of the camera to the little green icon, this is full auto setting. Most nikons will not take a picture if there is not a memory card in the camera! the see if it is not working because there is no card, turn on the camera and press the upper left button on the rear of the camera. it will tell you if it has a card or not. if it has a card installed you should be able to take a picture.

Nikon d40 monitor is black when camera is on

Does the menu show when you press the MENU button? Can you see your pictures when you press the Playback button (right-pointing triangle)? If so, then there's nothing to fix.
The D40 works as SLRs have worked for half a century. There's a viewfinder which allows you to frame and compose your picture. The LCD monitor is for menus, camera settings, and picture review. LiveView, which allows you to use the monitor for shooting, is a recent development, which Nikon introduced into their cameras with the D3 and D300, both introduced years after the D40.

How to take a picture using display instead of view finder

I don't believe there is. Nikon call it Live View in other models, but its not mentioned in the D40 user manual.....

here's the full manual, if you'd like it.

The flash on my camera

There is no top LCD on the D40. Put the camera in AUTO mode (green icon on the dial) and take a picture in the shade. if the flash does not go o, then you have a fault. Send back to authorized repair centre.

white balance can only be manually configured on "PSM" modes only, the other modes set the white balance automatically .
