Right speaker goes off when using Rec out on the Phono input
I have a turntable connected to my phono inputs on the Yamaha RX-595, and from rec out to the LINE in of my PC to get 5.1 sound. Lately, when I power up the receiver, the right channel sound is clearly very poor. I realized that if i move the REC OUT selector back and forth the sound comes back. Sometimes I hear a cracking sound when i do that, and then it works great. I remember having a similar problem with an old Phase Linear Preamp I had, where I had to tweak the volume to make one of the channels come back to life. Please help!! anybody, any idea of what it could be?...please let me know!!! Thank you , Martin
Dan, thank you so much for the quick response. Do you recomend any cleaner? where can I buy one? also, do you think I'll need the service manual to do this or the switch is exposed once I open the receiver?

The switch is contaminated. Pick up some electronic switch cleaner and spray into the switch. Move the switch back and forth a number of times and that should clear up the problem. Make sure that you get the cleaner that has a lubricant included.
Any place that sells electronics parts will have the spray cleaner. Spray into the switch itself and work the switch a number of times. No service manual is needed. You should be able to identify the actual switch once the unit is open.

Normally the turntable is connect to the amp via phono inputs on back (RCA connectors) the tape out to equalizer and equalizer out to tape in on amp. The equalizer does not have phono preamp. The equalizer may not clean up record scratches ,or pops or record track noise.
good luck
No. A dedicated phono input on your receiver means there is a preamp built into that input line already. This is made for a turntable without a preamp.
Check out eBay for one or, if you still have an older stereo receiver with a Phono input hanging around, use it to preamplify the TT and run an RCA pair from the Tape Out to any available stereo input on your Yamaha.
I've got the turntable outputs plugged into the phono inputs on the receiver amp.
I'm taking the Y cord (pair of RCA connectors at one end, mini plug at other) from the Tape Record (these are what you'd use to send a signal to the tape deck for recording) on the amp to the "line in" on the sound card. You may want to look up the specs on your sound card to make certain that you've got the plug in the correct socket. There may be a "line in" and a "microphone" socket. Use the "line in"
What recording software are you using? Audacity is free and is ok. I'm using Goldwave (costs ~$50) and highly recommend it. MUCH better than any other package I've tried. Just google "goldwave" to find it.
The recording software should have an option for selecting / specifying a source. If you have "microphone" selected and the y cord going into the "line in" socket, yoiu won't get anything.
go into your amp settings menu then to speaker settings, set zone 2 on and main on, turn up the volume for zone 2 about half way then connect phono cables from zone 2 pre out to a input on the external amp (eg cd input )
never use the phono input this is for turntables, connect this amp to your speaker switch/selector then to speakers.
Make sure your receiver has a PHONO input. If you are connecting it to a LINE or AUX input, then there is not enough signal to boost the sound coming from the turntable. Turntables require a PHONO input, because phono input's have a pre-amp on them, which boost the turntable signal. If you do not have a PHONO input on your receiver, you will need to buy a Phono Pre-Amp.
If you have a phono input, then you might have an issue with the turntable's RCA cables, or your cartridge may be at fault.
