Why is my router not broadcasting wireless signal?

  • joe_xray1991 Jan 03, 2011

You are right, unfortunately it is working thru Ethernet connection. I was hoping it would be a programming issue. Thanks for your help.

  • joe_xray1991 Jan 03, 2011

While I was trying to figure out my wireless issue I have messed up my network connection. I am now getting a "limited or no connectivity" message. When I go to cmdsceen and do an ipconfig it comes back with 169. Ip address and the partially English speaking lady could not help me.

Hi and welcome to FixYa!

Is the wireless working on wire? If it does then the transmitter of the router has reached it's break point. It does happen and it's a common problem. I used to have the same issue too and the solution was to replace the router itself.

Hope this helps and thank you for using FixYa! Happy New Year!

Keep losing signal

CONTINUAL DISCONNECTION OF WIRELESS CONNECTION

There are a few things that can cause you to lose wireless connection with your wireless router.
1. Weak signal strength, check the signal strength on your wireless card. If it is weak move the wireless router away from brick or concrete walls, mirrors, fish tanks and if possible locate the wireless router higher up.
2. Have you secured your wireless router from people near your from unauthorized access? i.e. change the default password, setup encryption use WPA2 or WPA, change the default SSID, and turn off SSID broadcast, and for added protection, enable MAC address filtering which allows only the MAC address/es of your wireless card/s to connect to your wireless router.
3. You could be getting interference from electrical sources such as air conditioners, arc welders, washing machines etc. If so, the power supply to the wireless routers and computers etc should be connected to a surge protection power board, better still connect your computer equipment to an UPS (Uninterrupted Power Supply).
4. Check the channels of the wireless routers and access points in your area and change the broadcast channel on your wireless router to an unused channel or one that is currently used but has the weakest signal strength. This will minimize interference with your wireless router from other wireless routers and access points in your area.

How can I increase the distance the router will broadcast?

If you are having problems receiving a decent signal , then try changing the channel the wireless is broadcast on your router if that fails to improve things your only other option is to buy a range extender. Thiis will be paired with your wireless network and then it will transmit the signal further

I have a new laptop with wireless at home. How do I set up the wireless connection from my zonet router? Victor

By default, wireless routers always broadcast wifi signal. The only thing you need to do is to enable the wifi radio receiver of your laptop. To do it, make sure that you have the wifi LED lit in your laptop which means that your wifi receiver is ON. Now, you need to connect your modem to your router so that your router will then broadcast internet signal. Then you are good to go. Your laptop should get connected automatically and receive internet signal.

If you want to configure your router, visit http://192.168.1.1 when you are connected to the network so that you can change some of your router's behavior.

Low broadcast signal

Turn off or move any other gadgets that may emit a wireless signal. Other wireless signals may prevent the router signal from being as strong as it should be

Having trouble connecting. I see my encrypted router, but it shows as "unknown." And when I try to connect with it, connection fails. Says not in range although I'm in my own house. :o)

you said that you can see the wireless network but it shows as unknown network
I think SSID broadcast on your wireless network must be disabled.
You will need to enable the SSID broadcast of your network.
Also try to change the wireless channel on the router.
WRT54G router's IP address will be 192.168.1.1. if you have not changed it.
Do you have any other computer connected to the router woth the ethernet cable ?
If you do not have the computer connected to the route then connect 1 computer to the rotuer with the ethernet cable.
Do not change any wireless setting on the wireless computer.
You will need to open the set up page of the router
Click Here for more info about how to change the wireless settings

Hi! It's ok to disable the wireless broadcast of the router however, it wont stop the router from broadcasting the wireless frequency. It will only hide itself from the people who are trying to connect to a free signal that are available.
