I hear a creaking sound when I turn the steering wheel. Could it be because it's cold?

It could be several problems but you can easily trouble shoot them. first ensure there has been a greese job done recently and it will help eliminate the ball joints and tie rod ends. the other culprit is the strut top. you may be able to trouble shoot this by spraying silicone/lube in around the top of the strut either from the top or bottom. you can do this with the ball joints and tie rod as long as you use a good lube(not wd40) check the boots for cracks (source for water ingestion). Hope this helps

Everytime I turn slowly I hear this creaking sound. The ride is smooth my steering wheel is great. My power steering is capped off. I dont know what the problem could be. I don't hear it right off when I...

I had a similar problem on my 2002 Escape, but it was also creaked when cold. It turned out to be an outer tie rod joint. It may also be a lower ball joint. My creaking would happen when turning the steering wheel even a quarter turn. I reached behind the tire and put my hand on the tie rod while my wife slowly turn the steering wheel back and forth. I could feel the very obvious vibration. Try the other side to see if you can feel the difference. Can you hear it when standing outside the car, and tell which side?

Creaking sound while turning steering wheel

i'll bet this is a front wheel drive or four wheel drive. when the front wheels are tied to the drive train. the front axle shafts bearings can go kaput. jack up the vehicle and turn the steering wheel all the way to one side and spin one tire at a time by hand. you are bound to hear snaping and cracking coming from the axle shafts.

Creaking sound while turning steering wheel

There's a chance that the ball joints need grease. This should help, however once they have started to make noise like that due to lack of grease, they usually have gone bad. Replacement may be the only remedy. Hope this helps.
