Rheem natural gas water heater installed about 5 years ago has begun to fail every 4 days or so it needs to be re-ignited manually. Works fine again for several days but inevitably will cease again heating the water and need restart procedure. The flame when observing seems to turn yellow periodically and I hear what sounds like moisture dropping on the burner area. I have cleaned and vacuumed out the igniter space underneath several times, which may extend the timeframe for the next occurence, but not a long term fix. Help?

Well you might have a pinhole leak than periodically puts out pilot light. Or you might have a bad thermocouple. Thermocouple is inexpensive and easy replacement.

SOURCE: Tankless Paloma NG hot water heater shuts down

have you checked the error codes on the heater?
you can do this by powering off the controler and pressing the up and down keys for a few seconds. this should take you into the diagnostics mode scroll using the up and down keys till you find the one that has the letter E on it and that will give you the last 8 error codes write them down and get back to me

SOURCE: I am having the same problem as posted by jek01 on

Remove power source from the unit. If remote control2.gif is installed; remove cover and lift the control wires on the terminal...can be accomplished from either end.

Restore power and see if unit functions normally.

Contact Paloma/Rheem customer (800-432-8373) support and notify them IF you are getting a code "76" error. Rheem has recently extended the warranty on the "Burner Control Assm."; which is your problem. The C4-C8 portion of the error code, is where the unit stops the ignition process...burner fails to light, or gives you intermittent hot water. In either case, contact customer support2.gif.

If this helps, please indicate so.

Hi,

The flame sensor is bad....and it is not sensing that the flame has lit....

Some models have a separate flame sensor and some use the ignitor to sense the flame...

If it has a separate sensor then clean it with a soft cloth... if it is the ignitor then the ignitor is bad...

My Jacuzzi J-N180F tankless water heater will not even light.

Access your product manual.
I cannot find a product manual.
Some major company, like Rheem, makes this computer that heats water.

Call service technician to repair the unit.
Copy following link for overview of type of problems found with tankless computers.
For example tankless computers require continual maintenance on yearly and monthly basis to prolong expected life of product.
http://waterheatertimer.org/Troubleshoot-Rheem-Tankless-water-heater.html

If tankless computer is older than 5 years, then assume it is like your 5-year old laptop computer.

Save problems, and repair the unit yourself, same day, by installing tank-type water heater:

Rheem tankless water heater error code 11

Error 11 is ignition failure, or insufficient gas, or defective sensor, dirty combustion parts.
Do the yearly required maintenance such as cleaning the combustion parts, and error code will probably be solved.
Problem is Rheem does not post service manuals for people to learn how to service their equipment without calling service tech.
Copy following link for Rheem troubleshoot resources
http://waterheatertimer.org/Troubleshoot-Rheem-Tankless-water-heater.html

The cost of yearly maintenance will easily eat away the expected yearly savings of $100 for typical family of 4.

Read manual thoroughly for troubleshooting and yearly maintenance requirements.
The manual has basic error codes and possible self-repair tips, but the same problem on one person's unit can be a different problem and different solution on another unit.

I have a Rheem (Paloma) GT199XN tankless water heater. It has worked fantastic since I installed about 5 years ago. Just recently, I have have intermitten issues of the burner not firing up when we turn on...

All costs are energy.
Here's the order of things I would do.

1) Contact Rheem for name of qualified service technician.

2) Call technician who can fix your specific unit, and can educate you about maintenance, and tricks and tips. These guys learn something new each day and are good to have in your rolodex/wallet as tankless unit ages.

3) Download manual, or read manual cover to cover and review maintenance protocol to make sure you're on a schedule for de-liming and other things required for tankless to work.

4) Ask Rheem how you can become familiar with their website pages that show updates and other information that affect your specific unit.

5) Install ordinary tank-type back up that can be put online quickly in case tankless needs parts or frequent maintenance as it ages.
