Ok, so I was just loading some new songs onto my RIO 256. Everything worked fine. I unplugged the RIO from my PC to go on a run and now it won't turn on. I've replaced the battery, tried the invert the battery trick, but no joy. When I try to reconnect it to the PC using the USB, it says "device not recognized"...it recognized it fine ten min ago....any advice?

SOURCE: My Rio says upgrader when I turn it on

UPGRADER is a mode that purges the firmware from the Rio player prior to flashing the unit. Firmware is basically the operating system for the player, so if it is corrupted any number of things can occur. You can enter UPGRADER mode to update the firmware on your player by holding down the MENU button when you power the Rio ON. Flashing the player in this mode erases all content. Try the following to get the unit out of UPGRADER mode, if powering OFF the unit will not correct it. ALL PLAYERS - If you accidentally entered UPGRADER mode, turn the unit OFF and then back ON again. - Download the latest version of the firmware for your player and upgrade the unit. Visit http://www.digitalnetworksna.com/support/rio - It may be necessary to run the firmware update more than once. - This process may erase content from your player. - If the player is detected by the computer, it is recommended that you format the player, which WILL erase content from the player. - Macintosh user's try flashing the player on a PC. FLASH MEMORY PLAYERS - Remove the battery and replace it, this will reset the unit. The Rio Forge, Rio se510, Rio Cali [Black Rio Stick], and Rio Chiba [Black Rio Stick] can lock up causing the player to be unresponsive. If this occurs there are two things that need to be performed to resolve the issue. First you want to remove power from the player this includes the battery and a USB connection for 20 minutes to reset the player. There is a capacitor on the player that stores a charge that holds the player in the locked state. By waiting the duration the capacitor will discharge and the player should function as normal. Second you will want to upgrade the firmware to the latest version and format the player to prevent future occurrences. HARD DISK DRIVE PLAYERS - If you have a Carbon, Nitrus, Eigen, or Karma, use a paper clip to reset the unit. Your Rio will power off automatically when it has been reset. It may be necessary to connect the player to AC power and then reset the player if it will not turn on. If you are still unable to have the player exit UPGRADER Mode, then try it on another computer. UPGRADE FIRMWARE - Connect to the internet - Go to http://www.digitalnetworksna.com/support/rio/ - Click on the appropriate player - Click on the FIRMWARE tab [showing by default] - Click on the latest firmware file [example: RioForge_firmware_133.exe] - Click SAVE when prompted - From the SA

SOURCE: Transfer error - Disagreement between player and software

I had the same issue and I eventually re-formatted the player. Once I had finished that, it seemed to work again, letting me add songs.

SOURCE: Music won't upload onto my Rio.

I have not been on FixYa for about a 1/2 a year so as I seem to be the only person answering Rio problems I have only just seen your problem... Sorry, so if you haven't bought an iPod yet (or you want to try and fix this anyway) then I would recommend wiping and rebooting your player:

Windows only.... Please post if you are not using windows...

Open My Computer with your Rio plugged in.
Right click on your Rio player and click on format.
Leave the default values - if it asks you something then use your initiative.
Then click on format.
Then when it has finished formatting go to your firmware (can be downloaded from: http://www.digitalnetworksna.com/support/rio/product.asp?prodID=112).
Follow the instructions and then it should load the firmware onto your player.
When it has done then your player should (in theory!) work properly.

Hope this helps

Your friend probably wanted to blame you for breaking her already broken mp3 player and you didn't figure that out until now.

Can not copy files from Rio Karma to PC

Files can be copied to the computer from the karma although it doesn't work all that well.
You'll need to use Rio Taxi. I think you can get that if you connect the karma to your network using the dock then browse to the karma's ip address and get it. If not you may have to try and find a place to download it.

Rio Carbon 5 g

When Microsoft initiated the DRM system, any Rio Carbon that was hooked into Windows Media Player had the previously working files invalidated. Happened to me as well. The player lasted me three years, and that is about as long as any Mp3 player is going to last we are finding out b/c of all the software snafus.

Rio forge 256 MB mp3 player

This happened to my player also. To fix it, you have to go to the rio website and download the most recent firmware for whatever model mp3 player you have. I went to: http://www.digitalnetworksna.com/support/rio/product.asp?model=265&SKU=90260558) Next install. Plug in your player to your USB to your computer - BUT (and here's the important part) you need to hold down the menu key while plugging it in. Keep holding until it powers up AND the word "UPGRADER" shows on the screen. Now, run the firmware upgrade program and follow the directions and it will see your player and upgrade the firmware (yes, even if it's the same firmware version.) You'll have to run the .exe file to get the upgrades onto your player. Unplug the player and it should be like new!

It worked once then It stopped when I unplugged it from the computer

Did you try reseting the player. There is a small hole in the top of the player between the earphone jack and the volume knob. Use a small paper clip and push the reset button. You should be able to restart the Rio.

RIO ce2100

Try this and let me know if it works: Plug the player into the computer (by the USB cable obviously), open your Rio Music Manager, go to "Tools", "Synchronization options". Then create a "synchronization profile" as instructed. As you progress through the instructions, your second preferrence to edit is called "content deletion". This is where you can tell your player to NEVER delete your music. (Choose "never" from the dropdown menu). Then follow the rest of the steps, answering the other questions as you prefer. Hopefully this will prevent your player from losing songs you've already downloaded.
