Have you tried changing the brand of battery? I find mine is incredibly finicky about what make of battery it will accept, especially as it gets older and the contacts on the battery-door lose their springiness. It's to do with the shape of the contact on the minus end of the battery. It will work with B&Q batteries because they have a wide, flat, slightly raised metal cap on the minus end, but it won't work with e.g. Eveready because their minus end doesn't stand up as high and has grooves running round it, which cause the battery-door contact not to - not to make contact, that is.
Even if you're using a classy rechargeable battery, if the minus end doesn't stick up a bit it may not work once the battery door's got a bit worn.
