Hi Jordan,
You should be able to access your BIOS setting when you first turn on the pc. The first screen you see will tell you (briefly) to push either the Esc button, or F8, F12 to access the BIOS setup. Once your in the BIOS you may have to hunt down the control your looking for but the options are not that many and you should be able find it within a few minutes. Word of warning, by changing settings in the BIOS, you can cause your pc to act much differently or not even boot up correctly. So if you enable the Advanced Host Controller Interface (AHCI) and it does not act like you want it to, you can always change it back.
Hope this helps

Dell system gx280 bios A08, OS install, need to increase memory, can I do this?

and old DELL, GX280.
why post lacking what kind and size memory now? 1GB? 2GB?
or if replacing it all so it all matches.?
buy it on crucial.com> they know what it holds.
but you never told full name of PC>
first off it is and old OptiPlex. came with windows 2000 ,omg./
some sold 2005 year so is 14 years old,. today.
Any 3020 is far newer and better,.$50 cash easy .....
why mess with any 2005 PC?
this PC came in 3 sizes,
SFF, , small desktop and full desktop . what might yours be?
the motherboards are NOT THE SAME>
DDR2 memory it is.
400 & 533 MHz DDR2 SDRAM

when pC was new only 1GB sticks were max size.

4GB max but the SFF is 2GB max, see?
4 slots of DDR but 2 only on SFF
SFF = small form factor PC. dinky do case. ok>?tiny

what works can be hard, on old PCs
old PCs have very tricky memory density limits per stick.
ok?>
That is why buy from only a place that allows fast , simple
exchanges or refunds. ok?

Encountering the Error STOP 0x0000007B when Installing Windows XP on Optiplex gx270. Error occurs when Setup starts loading Windows Setup Files.

That error is a boot device error and you need to check the BIOS to see what is listed for hard drives and other devices and see if AHCI is enabled etc.

SATA Hard Drive Type The Dell Optiplex GX280 Takes?

Hi,

It makes no difference providing the computer motherboards support SATA interface.

SATA 1 and 2 drivers are in the BIOS. If all the computers have SATA 1 you can upgrade the BIOS to latest version via Dell's support website.

I can't get into BIOS anymore. It just sails right by when I press F2 and starts up Windows. I've tried DEL and F1 but that doesn't work either. The problem started shortly after I updated the BIOS from...

remove the cmos battery from your motherboard and return it again after 5 seconds, that will restart your BIOS, or you look for the BIOS reset pin on your motherboard just consult your manual as guide.

Optiplex gx280 processor upgrade

eykraus,
I have some experience in upgrading your Dell.
If this gx280 was my computer and want to upgrade I'll only go to 3.0 but you need to upgrade you bios to support the new upgrade. You could also upgrade the memory as well. Put the power supply you have in so you can conserve.

I have the same Problem for the Optiplex GX280

Sound like you need to go to Dell's website and download the drivers for the video card and the sound card. If they have updated version of the bios for your computer that probably wouldn't hurt either.

Upon booting, i get dos prompt, doesn't do anything further

No compatibility problem in your case. XP should work well with Dell optiplex gx280. Try re-installing the OS, there is problem with the OS version you had used to install.Rate me if it is useful!!
