My machine is breaking the thread. I tried changing the needle, adjusting the tension, and different threads. It is still breaking the thread. I took the top cover off and oiled it and the bottom cover by the bobbin and cleaned that & oiled it. When I put the top cover back on the needle will not go up & down. I have the handi quilter handles and when I press them the motor just spins and the needle will not move.

What needle size and thread are you using? The needle may be too small for the size thread or you are not threading it correctly.
You should also check the bobbin area to see if the thread is getting caught or snagged.

SOURCE: needle thread breaks while quilting on machine frame

I think you might have better luck if you use 40 or 50 weight thread.

SOURCE: Juki HZL-E61: cannot get tension right on straight stitch

Loops on the bottom of the fabric direct the problem to the top thread. Rethread again and make sure the thread goes through the tension discs. Lift the foot, because this is what opens the discs. When sewing and the foot is down, the discs should be closed and thus giving the upper thread the tension it needs.

SOURCE: the top thread keep breaking. should the tension

Thread breakage is usually due to the needle in backwards, upper tension too tight or old/weak thread.

When replacing the needle, make sure that the flat side is to the right (3 o'clock position) and is pushed all of the way up before tightening.

What brand and weight of thread are you using and are you sewing with the foot or free motion sewing?

SOURCE: Needle Thread breaking after about 30 seconds of quilting

Are you threading it correctly? I've had this problem twice, the first few times the thread was wrapped around different items (below the spool holder and then around the needle) the other times I threaded it wrong. Double check that the machine is threaded correctly with the manual. I've missed a step here or there and it does make a difference.

SOURCE: Thread continues to break

I had this same problem when I was doing free motion quilting on my Juki TL-98Q. Any thread I used and I tried many plus all the other tricks. Then I got out my thread stand and that did it. No breakage, no shredding. The thread come off the spool from a longer distance and doesn't twist so much. My thread stand is a cheap one from Jo-Ann fabrics. You should be able to buy one online. It will be worth the postage if you don't live near Jo-Ann's.

The needle thread keeps breaking, I'm using good quality thread and have tried re threading and changing the needle but it still keeps breaking, any advice would be most welcome.

1. Set the tension on the bobbin.
2. When you thread the upper thread do it with the pressure foot up.
While you are threading give slight tugs to check for snags. If there are snugs you must fix them.
3. Put the pressure foot down and adjust the tension to four. Give a tug. It should have tension but still allow the thread to flow.
(Look at your thread and look for fuzz on the sides. This indicates a bad quality thread. A good choice is embroidery.)
4. Make sure the needle has been installed going the right direction. Usually flat to the front or to the right side.
5. Turn the hand wheel while you hold the needle thread to the front.
The bobbin thread should come above the throat plate in about one turn.
NOW YOU SHOULD BE ABLE TO SEW.
LOOK AT INFORMATION ABOUT BOBBIN TENSION.

Is there any other thing I can do to stop the thread from the upper looper from breaking after about 30cms of sewing. there is no sign of it being about to break. I have changed thread, needles and...

it could be due to one or more of the following

  • Threading is not correct.
check that bobin is not snagging thread,
remove bobin and remove any dust and fluff from bobin area
  • Needle is wrong size.
  • Needle has been inserted wrong.
  • Needle and thread does not match.
  • Starting to stitch too fast.
  • Thread take-up lever has not been threaded.
  • Correctly thread machine.
  • Replace needle with correct size.
  • Properly insert needle.
  • Start machine at a medium speed.
  • Check threading order.

Thread breaks off

Where does it break? You change tension at the top via the tension discs the thread passed through, and at the bottom by adjusting the small screw on the bobbin case - the screw on the front part of the spring. Thread size matters as well as needle size. For everyday upholstery I use #69 nylon thread, and "G" bobbins.
If the thread's breaking at the hook you may need to adjust timing. But most commonly thread breaks because of improper tension, threading, needle or thread size.

Thread breaks when embroidering

Try changing threads. If you're not using embroidery thread specifically, the "treatments" they use on different threads can really cause problems.
