G4 wont boot up

I have a  G4 Graphite thats been working flawlessly for several years. Suddenly it wont boot up. Ive tried everything from reinstalling the OS, to a new hard drive, to reseting the memory, new battery... you name it.  There is 640 mb of ram and the hard drive is 250 gigs... all new! The error messages range from an immediate "you must restart your computer" without ever going thru the boot process. to some info about not having correct drivers and the computer is "hanging here... " The system wont even boot from the disc anymore....  Anybody gotta CLUE whats goin on???

You poor little mac is hanging there eh, its having a kernel panic. which gives you the impression the motherboard has packed in. My G4 suddenly began doing this overnight, fine one day dead the next. Anyway i took it to a repair centre who said it was the board and couldnt get me one due to it being obsolete so to ebay i went. In went the new board and yeehah.. the same bloody thing occured. So after that i found the only way of it booting up was to open the case slightly just to get my hand in and push down on the processor ( not applying the pressure onto the board, but as though your trying to push the processor down toward where the drives are housed), This seemed to work but sometimes it would pop up the old restart you computer or the little wheel would just spin till i was an old man. so i removed the processor and sat for an hour with a magnifying glass and moved the pins closer together on the board. refitted and its been going strong ever since, Wierd i know, my cousin has been a mac fan for years and satin disbelief when i showed him how i booted it up. I have a G5 but just doesnt have the character my G4 has.

I agree. You have either a hardware issue or a software issue. DUH! Did you test the memory to see if it is good? Did you test the power supply? Those are two things you didn't mention.

OK sounds disturbing.. You have the same unit I've been happy with for some time.
So....You either have a Hardware of Software issue- First check the Hardware:

If you have it...use the CD Apple Hardware Test. that came with the computer
Once you get it in the CD drive - power off the computer.
Then, restart it while holding the "C" key down. This will makethe computer boot up from the CD and from there you can run theon-screen menu diagnostics...this will give you a detailed report ofeverything hardware wise good or bad in your box.

If all hardware is good then you will probably have a software issue and, you may need to Restore the Mac..with the Software Restore disks ( 4 CDs) that came with your model, then reinstall OSX ( 2CD) (depending on which OS you are using)
Here's a quick link to Apple's info on doing this.Apple

I suggest giving Apple a call even though the G4 is probably out of warrenty. Apple has provided me with out-of-warrenty phone help(usually late at night when they're not busy) for free and gave megreat help.

Also... check in your area for any Mac User Groups..(that's right- MUGs). any missing diskscan probably be easily located there, and these folks love to help.
Good luck...danielj

I have a Mac G4 desktop. It froze up so I restarted using the power button and when it came up it had a blinking question mark inside a folder. It will not do anything even after restarting several times....

This means the mac can not find the system to start up, you can try holding down the alt key as you start the mac, this may bring up a choice of systems to boot from if not then try holding down the shift key at startup, as this will boot without extensions loading. If none of this works then you need the startup dvd that came with the mac, if you dont have it the you need a retail copy of the mac os that will boot your mac , if its g4 then osx 10.3 or 10 .4 will work.

cheers

IMac G4 Mac Desktop: imac g4 wont boot up scree's just blue?...

If it only boots to a blue screen, try booting up in Safe Boot mode:

http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1455

If this does not work, boot from your install DVD and use Disk Utility to repair the disk:

http://support.apple.com/kb/ht2956

If this does not resolve the issue you may need to use your isntall disc to perform an Archive and Install:

Leopard won't install

Found this on the net:
http://www.brad-x.com/2007/10/27/howto-leopard-install-with-giga-designs-g4-upgrade/

Those upgrade cards always have given me a problem with migrating to Leopard. If you can upgrade to a used G5 or even Intel basd mac you might be more happier with less hassle.
