Just fixed mine tonight. Follow instructions on http://www.linux-hacker.net/InfoGlobe/ for globe removal. I used a .020" feeler guage. The solder joints on the small circuit board at the end of the arm are subject to vibration from operation and about a bazillion revolutions before failing. You'll need a good quality soldering iron with a fine tip, some solder wick, a bit of patience and a bright light and some reading glasses will not hurt. I removed the solder and then the small board. I'm using an 800 degree tip, so with something like that you want to get on/off the pads as fast as reasonably possible so you don't cook it. Then I re-tinned the traces and re-soldered the small board onto the end of the arm. At first it didn't want to light up, but on depressing the "Select" button, all was good. Happy to have ol' blue back up and running again :~)
Just fixed mine. http://www.linux-hacker.net/InfoGlobe/ was very useful. Mine was much simpler. The inner cover was rubbing the rotor, which probably caused the display to light at the wrong time. I just reseated the inner cover and all is good.
