The flat part of the needle goes toward the back. You may also be using the wrong size needle for your project. Make sure the bobbin is threaded correctly. The bobbin may also need the tension adjusted, small screw on the bobbin case. You may have something lodged, try unthreading the bobbib and moving the large knob on the side back and forth with only the top thread. If there is broken thread etc under there you should be able to see and remove it. I have also used a blow-dryer to blow out dust and fuzz.Remember to oil your machine using the correct oil. Be careful to not force the fabric by either pulling it tight or holding it so that the feed is being forced. There are tutorials at the Singer site if none of this helps you.

I purchased a Singer 5511 Scholastic last spring and the sales person did a demo on serging. However I cannot find instructions to serge and can't see it in any manuals.

Hello, Ellen -

If you do not already own the Singer Overcast Foot for your Singer 5511 Scholastic machine, you will need that. Plus, you will need serger needles.

If you reside in the USA, you can find the Overcast Foot and serger needles here:
SingerOnline.com
Overcast Foot:
https://www.singeronline.com/siovfo0.html
Singer Serger Needles:
https://www.singeronline.com/sisene10pa.html

I was hoping to find a video tutorial online for you, but no luck. I did find written instructions with photos regarding using a sewing machine overcast stitch as a serger. This is the link:
https://doitbetteryourself.club/how-to-overcast-stitch/

Apparently, the Singer 5511 Scholastic isn't a true serger.

Best wishes.

How do I oil a singer scholastic model 5523?

Consult the owner's manual. Newer computerized models require very little, if any, oiling. Oiling in the wrong place could damage the machine.

Have you made sure that your bobbin has the thread going counter clockwise into the bobbin case. In other words when it leaves the bobbin the thread foldsback on itself to slip through the bobbin tension spring. If it feeds directly into the bobbin spring ti ont create the essential tension.:)

Maintenance of Athena 2000 (Singer), specifically, cleaning and oiling

These might give you an idea on cleaning and oiling your machine - I also use my vaccum cleaner sometimes- but very carefully.
Always use sewing machine oil - singer brand is good. - If you have pipe cleaners they are good to use on hard to reach places.
