Sounds like the selection process is controlled by an IC to me, which might have developed a fault.

Use sony recording line outputs to feed the aux input on the Kenwood.

I doubt you will be able to find a digital copy, and Kenwood dropped their home audio line 2+ decades ago. I probably have a hard copy of the manual, as I was a Kenwood Factory Service Center for over 25 years, however, it is not free. the standby light should be on if the unit is not 'ON' if you want the 894 to turn on when you power up the 996, then you will have to plug the ac for the 894 into the 'switched' ac outlet on the back of the 996
what specific problems do you have with this system

Some says it is only dead when it is buried.

Open it up and check, ( Be sure it is unplugged)

Only if you feel you can DIY or have a tech do it for you.

you can calculate power needed as follows:-
amplifier power must be 20% more than the total power of all speakers(if total speakers power is 100 watt)you need amplifier of 120 watt at least more is ok.

The power amp does need an imput signal ie. tuner, cd , and such to play. You can use the power amp with the other equipment.
