This may just be a settings issue.
With the headphones disconnected, click "System Preferences" on the dock and then select "Sound".
From the Sound window, select the "Output" tab and then select "Internal Speakers".
Once you have "Internal Speakers" select, check that the slider at the bottom of the window is moved over to about 3 out of 5 on the scale and that "Mute" is NOT checked.
Once you have done this, close the window by pressing the the red button at the upper-left. Check whether or not you have sound now. If you do not, then something has failed inside your Macbook and you will need to have it repaired.

Your inner jack could be jacked jack LOL . No really sometimes the inner connection gets loose or the connection to the headphone jack port not making good contact might need replaced if you know that your head phones themself work fine!

Why doesn't the headphone jack work on my MacBook Pro?

A bad cord or cord end. The second could be your units 3.5mm Jack. Also just in case you muted or changed a seting I have included a video to check that as well.

It may be something in your control panel that you have to adjust or change the settings on. Not sure what you have for a laptop but it will be in the listening or sound portion of your computer.

When i plug my headphones in they wont work and the sound stays on the laptop

Sounds like your headphones aren't making a good connection inside of the laptop. Take a flashlight and try to peer down into the hole and make sure there's nothing lodged inside of it keeping it from making a good connection. A can of compressed air would work wonders in this situation.

Good luck to you!

First go to control panel, sounds and audio devices
go to the audio tab and make sure that your usb device is selected for audio playback
then, unconnect the headphones and restart your computer
after restarting, connect the headphones and Speakers , it should work
