Marantz SR-5200 - Analog inputs only play the right channel

I´ve been using my SR-5200 for quite some years now without any glitch, connected to a Pioneer DVD Player through the Digital input.

Recently I decided to plug my iPod to it via a Soundock and one of the Analog inputs. Surprisingly, only the Right Channel plays any music at all. (Trying the several analog inputs yields the same results), S.Direct does not fix the problem (only right channel seems to be operational) and trying with the internal Tuner (which I had not used until now) results again in only the right channel playing music.

Any hints?

Thanks a lot in advance

    Dear Marsover,

Thanks a lot for your quick answer.

I am sorry, I forgot to add to my post that I tried inverting the cable (no changes in output, still only Right Channel). Tried several other cables as well to no avail.

Also, the internal tuner of the Receiver delivers only Right Channel sound. Definitely not a cable issue.

    Any ideas?

    J

No surround modes produce any sound . only have sound on s direct mode. marantz sr 5200

Not having the ability to look at it on the bench, more than likely your DSP chip is bad. If you have a local repair house that is willing to confirm that is the problem without charging you an arm and a leg, that's your best bet. It is an expensive repair, anywhere between 300 to 500. At that point, I would say to replace the unit. Sorry for the bad news, but that's my "best guess" The only other thing to check would be your "Audio input Settings" Make sure it's either on "Auto" or whichever type you are using. "Digital Coaxial", "Optical", or "Analog" (RCA) hope this helps! If you have any further questions, just post a reply and I can help further. Best of luck!

What would work better for Marantz SR 4200 Apple Composite or component cable? In order to play music through the amp as well as watching videos

Component Video is a big step up the food chain in quality. Component Video inputs are for video only, not for audio. I don't see Component Video inputs on the Marantz SR-4200; only Composite and S-Video. S-video would be a step up from Composite and it carries analog stereo sound.

You don't give any clues as to the source's audio capabilities.

Digital Audio of either flavor is preferable. Grab the best possible TV-related audio from your Cable/Satellite box to the Marantz and run a pair of RCA audio cables to your TV just in case you want to watch the weather channel without hi-fi sound.

Do have an idiots guide as to how to wire up the SR-4200 to a TV

I will interperate this as:
"So you want to play sound through your Marantz SR-4200?"

You need to clarify what sort of system setup you have, however i will put down a few ways to wire this up to your TV.

If you have a Set-top-box that gets the TV Channels, that is where the sound comes from. If you have a TV that plugs straight into the wall, you will have to get the sound from the TV. Grab a RCA Stereo cable - (White and Red heads, if you don't know what they look like, Google it).

If you are unclear about this, i have tried to make a diagram down the bottom to explain how this is to work. What you will do is Take the sound from the Set-Top-Box or TV and reroute it into your fantastic Marantz SR-4200.

1. Plug Red Plug into the the Red Slot, and White into the White on the back of your set-top-box or TV Out (if you get it around the wrong way, the speakers will be reversed.)

2. Plug the other end of the cable into the back of your Marantz SR-4200 in the TAPE input or VHS input as they are analog signal inputs. Turn on Marantz SR-4200 and turn it onto Tape or Vhs (depending on where you plugged it in).

[Set-Top-Box or TV out] >-------> into >------> [Marantz SR-4200]

If you still don't get it, then try searching You-Tube for a guide "Plug Tv into Stereo". I myself couldn't turn up anything useful

Loss of volume on left channel

Marantz SR 5200/6200 lost audio or crackling on left or right channel except in mode s-direct is now fixed !
The root cause is a defective inegrated circuit on DSP board (the one with digital inputs). To fix it change the chip CS4391 by a new one or better by the improved version CS4392. On my device a capacitor was cut close to this IC : replace one 1uF after changing the IC. For any question search me with my callsing "F5RCT"; i have a spare IC for the one who is able to change it !
