If you can operate the unit using the ON/OFF button and Station Preset buttons, then the faceplate is OK.
Check out my tutorial on fixing a No Display, which may help:

How do I change time on the MP538U? Instruction manual is no help

Hit the 'fnc' button (function) turn the control knob until you see clock adjust in the display. Press and hold the control knob until the time display blinks. To select what you want to adjust push the control knob to the right or left to select minutes hours. Push the knob up or down to make the adjustments. Exit the clock adjust function by pressing the 'fnc' button again. Here's a link to your owners manual for future problems. Have a great day and thanks for using fixya!

Display Problems Kenwood

the problem is more than likely bad solder connections on the surface mount resistors located on the right front of the deck itself.

I hooked up my kenwood kdc 128 cd player and nothing works

i had the same problem as you, i own a 98 ford escort, and i couldnt find a wiring diagram that matched the ones in my car . i managed to connect the constant (red) and switched (yellow) to the wires in the car but i had made a mistake with the ground (black) . so i re connected it to where its suppose to go so now the head unit actually lights up and turns on.

now i have another problem because my head unit doesnt stay on for any longer than 1 mintute

Kenwood KDC-MP538U does not save settings like time and date

I have had the same problem, my problem was that i accidentaly hooked up the constant wire to the switched, and the switched to the constant, causing it to turn off completely, resetting everything. So if this is the problem then just switch the wires in the back of thew head unit, should be the fatter yellow wire, and the fatter red wire
hope this helps
