Question about Mongoose Cycling

1 Answer

Hi...just put together my son's new Bike (20'' Boys' Mongoose Rebel Freestyle Bike) and I noticed that when pedaling backwards, it's not smooth, and sounds like something is rubbing or grinding (pedaling forward seems to be ok). I don't think this is normal...is there something I need to do, like apply oil, or is there a problem?

It sounds as though the chain is too tight. Check to see when it is "freewheeled" if the chain gets tighter. Generally this will happen because the chain ring (front sprocket) was not perfectly aligned with the "spider" (thing it bolts to). You can loosen the chain a little and see if this helps. Be careful because you don't want it so loose the it comes off while riding. What I usually do is adjust the tension of the chain with the sprocket in the tight spot. Kind of tight but without the "grinding" feeling.
Good luck.

What is the crank bearing size??

Almost all Mongoose models use the standard BSA 68.
I would write a question to them at:

This bearing should not fail during the normal life of the bicycle, unless the rider weight is over 80 Kg.

I am wondering where I can order a back wheel for the mongoose 20 inch outer limit boys bike. Accidently got run over and is very bent. Thank you deb

Any Mongoose dealer or bicycle shop should be able to handle that or just web search for a 20" BMX wheel. It doesn't appear to be unique.

I took the pegs off my son's mongoose outer liit freestyle bike (20") and now cannot figure out how to put them back on. I am not sure what to do with the silver washer?????

The silver washer will go between the frame of the bike and the peg. Then the nut for the wheel bolt will go into the peg and screw on from the inside of the peg. Unless they are solid pegs in which case you will put the washer on first still and then screw the peg on as if it were the nut itself.

What causes my mongoose freestyle girls 20" hard to pedel?

Could have sticky or seized up crank bearings where the pedals are or the rear wheel bearings. Have you tried pedaling and spraying a lubricant where all the bearings are or remove and re-grease the bearings?
