to play online you must pay for an xbox live gold subscription. you can do it on your xbox where it says upgrade profile, online at the xbox website under the my xbox tab, then accounts, then under membership options choose upgrade/manage account or you can buy a gold subscription card at any games store. the smallest you can get is 1 month for just over ten dollars, or 12 month which is usually about 80 dollars. note that you need a valid credit or debit card to purchase online.

and in order for you to play match making game you need to subscribe for the gold subscription it's either you can use the prepaid or your credit card

To go live you must have a RJ-45 (ethernet) Cable in the back of the xbox hooked up to a router or modem, or even a seperate port on your computer. Once it is connected, on the xbox dashboard go to Xbox Live. There you can sign up and buy a subscription with your credit card. If you feel uncomfortable purchasing items online with your credit card, you can go to local game store which would probably be selling a 12 month card for 49.99.

I'm not sure if you can get them at retail stores, but they are available on Ebay. Don't get the ones that state theya re for xbox live gold membership.
You can also get the xbox live starter pack which includes 3 months xbox live and a headset (that is if you can still find them, again ebay is a great starting place)

You should be able to enter your credit card number and pay the $50 yearly straight through the xbox. Check it out in the dahboard and look for live on there.
