You have two things that orient the radar, on is called heading (or bearing) alignment. This is where you aim your radar so that a target comes up at 12 o'clock when dead ahead. Access this mode by pressing and holding menu duing power on, and go in to Installation Mode, radar setup, next page, align heading. I have posted a "tip" on this, search for VX2 radar alignment.
After this is done, North up is accomplished by having a magnetic input (fluxgate compass or autopilot). Calibration of this compass varies, but if it is accurate, then all should line up nicely.

Ais and 1920c Furuno chart plotter

n the system setup, under “UNITS” I set BEARING to “MAG” (magnetic). This will cause the unit to display course / bearing information in relation to the Magnetic North and match magnetic compass readings. It is not the same as True North! One has to be careful with this setting. There are a number of areas where the earth's magnetic field is locally disturbed, sometimes very significantly. Your GPS may not account for it. - again, under “UNITS” I set “METRIC”.

When I turn on the unit it will not read the depth only a blue screen and it will not let me switch out of auto mode or run the sounder test?

I know this is an old question but just ran across it. The 1833C/NT is a radar and chart plotter. It requires the external and optional black box sounder to have depth recorder functionality.

Radar Displays the image upside down

If this is on the radar screen, you'll have to set your heading alignment on your radar. The radar may be 180 degrees out. if this occurs on the plotter, then if you have a heading sensor attached or an autopilot, your heading may be off.

Classic Navionics chip in a Furuno 1833C

Gold Navionics is really not bad at all, but by todays standards, lousy. This is a VX1 unit and the classic cartography is frowned upon now, but in the day, this was quite good. So you have to ask, is it worth replacing for cartography alone? Radar and Sonar will plug and play to an 1834C, which is available with C Map or Navionics. Furuno 3D, on the other hand, uses the hyper cool Map Media 3D cartography with sat images and all that, plus other cartography too.
