If the RDS data is displayed it mean that the discriminator circuit - the circuit that extracts the sound form an FM signal - is faulty. The circuit will have to be replaced, a job for someone with electronics experience: he must identify the exact model and version of the chip, replace it and adjust the phase shift if necessary.

Chapter 6:
Using the tuner
Listening to the radio
The following steps show you how to tune in to FM and
AM radio broadcasts using the automatic (search) and
manual (step) tuning functions. If you already know the
frequency of the station you want, see Tuning directly to a
station below. Once you are tuned to a station you can
memorize the frequency for recall later-see Saving
station presets below for more on how to do this.
1 Press the FM/AM button to select the tuner.
2 Use the FM/AM button to change the band (FM or
AM), if necessary.
Each press switches the band between FM and AM.
3 Tune to a station.
There are three ways to do this:
Automatic tuning
To search for stations in the currently selected band,
press and hold TUNE ?©/?? for about a second. The
receiver will start searching for the next station,
stopping when it has found one. Repeat to search for
other stations.
Manual tuning
To change the frequency one step at a time, press
TUNE ?©/??.
High speed tuning
Press and hold TUNE ?©/?? for high speed tuning.
Release the button at the frequency you want.
Improving FM stereo sound
If the TUNED or STEREO indicators don't light when
tuning to an FM station because the signal is weak, press
the MPX button to switch the receiver into mono
reception mode. This should improve the sound quality
and allow you to enjoy the broadcast.
Using Neural THX
This feature uses Neural Surround™, THX® technology to
achieve optimal surround sound from FM radio.
• While listening to FM radio, press AUTO/DIRECT for
Neural THX listening.

Thanks for the reply - I'll check out the discriminator over the Christmas break. The last time that I worked on this type of circuit was at college in the 1970s!
The solution was very helpful and surprisingly quick. I'll definitely use your website again.
Hi Brian,
I'm having problems with the radio tuner on my UD-M30 system as well, and your problem sounds similar to mine. I get no sound when trying to tune FM or AM stations, just a very quiet hiss. I do get the RDS text displayed however.
Could you provide some some further guidence on how you fixed the discriminator circuit?
I'm no expert but reasonably able to fix most things with a bit of guidence!
Any help would be much appreciated!

I have a 1997 ford escort and the female seat belt red clasp part on the passenger side does not clasp the seat belt buckle when inserted. Any ideas for fixing this? Maybe something got lose inside the clasp that can be removed? Can the back seat portion of the clasp be moved to the front since no one seats in the back? Other ideas ?

printronix line printer WEP P7010
Cleared trapped food debris, stripped & cleaned air / water tubes, replaced pressure switch, check position of rotor, run machine, re check position of rotor, still in same place.
The printer still works. When the cover is opened the last two lights come on, then off when I shut cover. The light that stays on as solid blue when the printer is resting blinks as a faded orange when I shut off and turn back on.
