I am having a problem with shut down the computer.After shut down command it displays windows will shutting down and hangs but will not shut down i need to press the power button to shut down(My computer is a compaq 620 notebook type and I am having OS of windows XP service pack 2)

Something is not closing on exit. Try running in safe mode, then shut down. If it shuts down then something is loading and present in the taskbar which isnt closing down.

If you have Windows
Left-click START or the round blue Windows icon at bottom left of screen.
Or press the Windows key at bottom row of keyboard.
Left-click the white right-arrow symbol next to "Shut down".
This drops down a choice menu.

Toshiba Tecra M10 hanging when windows is shutting down after an update

Are you sure you are not too fast or impatient for it. Sometimes after doing updates it might take awhile to get past the Windows is shutting down...

Give it some time and see what happens. If after 15 minutes it is still there, press and hold the Power Button until it shuts off then Reboot. Try shutting down again and see if it hangs.

the power outages may have destroyed a part in the pc or corrupted somthing on the hard drive....try to turn it off before windows starts booting if it shuts down fine its your hard drive which means you may need to reinstall windows

This is a possible malware or virus attack. Your system is encountering data or system corruption preventing it to execute the command during shut down. Best fix is to reinstall Windows 7 in your computer to erradicate all errors and make sure to install an updated security software (antivirus) afterwards.

To resolve the issue, perform the following:

Click Start, Run.
Type gpedit.msc and click OK.
Navigate to the following path:

User Configuration\Administrative Templates\Start Menu and Taskbar

Double-click "Remove and Prevent Access to the Shut Down command"
Select "Not configured" or "Disabled"
Close Group Policy window.

Computer hangs up on shutting down screen

Ok.....

1. Make sure ALL user accounts are logged off!!!
2. UPDATE ALL DRIVERS
3. Check to see how many Programs are running while attempting to Shutdown the PC..(the more programs it tries to close, the longer it can take...(ESPECIALLY WITH LOW AMOUNT OF RAM/SLOWER RAM)
