THE ANSWER (TO MINE AT LEAST) IS HERE:
As a safety precaution, when the protection circuitry operates 3 times consequently, the capability to turn on the power is disabled.
Solution (according to Yamaha service):
Plug the power cord out. Plug it back in.
Press the following three buttons at the same time for 5 seconds: Main Zone + Info + Tone Control
The receiver will open.

If that solution won't work, disconnect the mains, remove the amplifier top cover, locate the IC82 that is a small 8 pin EEPROM near the main processor, jumper the pins 2 and 3 with a small screwdriver etc and plug the main power cable. The amp should reset and start. Sometimes you might have to press the power button. After it powers on just release the jumper and all done.
My Name - what do you mean by “jumper the pins”?
My amp still only stays on for 3 seconds (unless it’s in safe mode) I’m assuming that this to reset the memory stored in this chip?
I tried to hold a mini screwdriver so that the pins 2&3 next to each other on IC82 were touching and powered the unit on, but nothing happened. Perhaps I’m doing it wrong?

Hi, i got Yamaha 677 and since 1 week i got no sound from speaker,Monitor Audio BX.
Was working in the morning and in the evening not anymore.
On display showing Decoder Off and speakers disappears from display.
I did all kind of ressets, and unplugged all cables and HDMI and leave out of power...and then connect everything again, but still no sound.
Even from Radio FM no sound,only showing frequency and name of the station, i connect also my Phone via Analog and via wifi, but still no sound, it showing on display the name of the singer but no speaker .
I have the receiver since 4 years, and suddenly dont see my speakers!!
When i power on,it does make sounds like it started normaly, display on, but my speakers dont start!
Hi all, I know this is an old thread, but it helped me repairing my RX V663.
Mine switch on, but of after one second it would switch off again.
Pressing and holding 'straight' and 'audio select' followed by pressing Power On worked as some kind of override, so it would show me an 'PS2 PRT' error.
Using 'INFO' and 'TONE' combined brought me in an 'Advanced Setup', where test no. 8 would show a PS1 of 145 (OK, it's within the 110-255 limit),
but the PS2 value was L077, so I assume Low with a value of 77.
The limits for this test are 88-140, as shown on page 47 of the service manual.
It turned out to be a 7812 positive regulator on the MAIN-2 board, I could check the voltages on connector CB303 of that little board, it's accessible from the top of the Amp, it was only 1,56V
This board is a 25 cm long and 3cm wide board, attached to the main cooling body in the center of the Amp.
With some fiddling I replaced IC104 (7812 regulator) with a 1.5Amp version that had a metal cooling tab as well.
I did put insulation between it to be sure, since the original had a plastic housing, so I did not want to create an unwanted ground loop of some sort.
After the replacement the 12V came back as normal.
After that I had to perform a full reset by going to step 23 of the Advanced Setup menu.
Turn the knob to select 23, then press one of the 4 audio field select buttons, it will show Preset RSRV.
Now power of the Amp, all done.

Can you be a little more specific about what the fault is and what you are trying to do? Is the machine constantly powering off?
The reset functions are in the ADVANCED SETUP menu which can be accessed by holding down the STRAIGHT button while you turn the power on.
If you can give more specific details about the problem, it will be easier to determine what might need to be reset - rather than resetting the whole unit.

OK, Try this:
1. Leave the speakers disconnected
2. Disconnect the AC cord for a few minutes then reconnect
3. Hold down "TONE CONTROL" and "PURE DIRECT" then press the "MAIN ZONE/POWER ON" button while holding them down. Continue to hold all 3 buttons for 2-3 seconds
It should be possible to clear the fault from the "self-diagnostic" mode. However, information on how to access this is unverified. If there is no response try the above steps again but this time use "TONE CONTROL" and "STRAIGHT" for step 3.
See if you get any response and let me know what happens.

Sorry, but I have to admit defeat, at least temporarily. There may be no option other than to return this to Yamaha.
You can reset the protection on many of these Yamaha units by simply unplugging, but this doesn't work for yours. Others can be reset from the self-diagnostic menu, but these units are fairly new and I can't find out how to access this and none of my usual sources seems to know.
The method for accessing the self-diagnostics (and the solution) should be in the service manual but there isn't one available for free download. There are places offering service manuals for about $20, but I don't trust many of them to supply what they claim to have. There is also no absolute guarantee it can be reset even if you get one.
I'd be very surprised if there wasn't some method of "soft" reset for this unit but the method for his hasn't "leaked" out yet. The main reason for returning the unit to Yamaha is to check for any internal hardware damage before resetting the unit.
Basically, these are your options:
1. Try to get a service manual
2. Post some messages on specialist AV forums for service manual / reset method
3. Keep trying to access the self-diagnostic mode -
The access method is the same on most models of Yamaha receivers - press the power on/off button while holding two buttons on the front, then release the power button but continue holding the other two buttons for at least 3 seconds. The two buttons vary between units as not all machines have the same buttons, but they always use at least one of the "STRAIGHT", "TONE CONROL" or "DIRECT" buttons. Other possible buttons to try with any of these would be the "PROGRAM" or "INPUT" buttons. It's unlikely any of the others would be used.
As the machine is locked, you can safely try some combinations of the above without harming the machine. It might also be worth trying both "PROGRAM" buttons or both "INPUT" buttons while turning the power on as described above. The only other option is . . .
4. Return the unit to Yamaha
Sorry, but that's the best I do right now. I will keep searching for both the reset method and/or service manual and post back if I can find one. In the meantime, have another try at accessing the self-diagnostic mode. You can also try requesting help from other experts as it's possible that someone else here knows the answer. Don't waste your time with anyone suggesting simply unplugging it or anything that seems to be a guess. If they aren't at least offering information on accessing the self-diagnostics, then the truth is, they don't know the answer either.

If you are referring to "protect mode", there is no reset. See the link below for an explanation of protect mode. Specifically for your unit, should you find that the outputs are defective, you can expect a parts cost in the $50-$70 range for the repair. Please update this with any other questions you may have.

The unit's protection circuitry must have kicked in when I was listening with the volume turned way up and went into standby (red light). I pressed the power button and the unit turned on at the same volume level and went back into standby (red light). I turned down the volume, pressed power button, it did the same thing...but this time the unit did not turn on...stayed in standby mode.
According to the manual, after 3 consecutive times, of triggering the protection circuit, the unit will not turn on (stays in standby mode with red light next to power button)....the manual says it has to be reset by a Yamaha repair person. I was wondering if there was a reset procedure for this. I don't live anywhere close to any authorised repair centers and would really like to get the unit working again during the Christmas season.
Yes, I tried that as well with the same response.....remains in standby mode....no display.

I tried both of the above procedures.
The unit still does not come out of standby, red light turns on when unit is plugged into wall socket.
All cables, speakers, etc. were completely disconnected prior to contact you through fixya.

Above procedure tested on Yamaha RX-673 with protection/flashing power led trigged. Of course make sure the amp has no any output/input wires in short or internal damage components, usually this makes it to go in protection loop. Most causes are a damage final output transistor or the rectifier bridge diode on the two main transformer output/secondary red wires. This will cause the internal main fuse for the input of main transformer to blown. First check that fuse to see if is ok then reset the amp. If the fuse is damage, for sure its an internal component damage as the ones mention and the reset won't fully fix it unless you first replace them. First thing first.
