After an hour or so my computer (compaq presario 6000 windows XP) shuts down. I turn it back on and it enters a startup-shutdown cycle forever. It never gets near booting up, the motherboard just starts up...

Ok I think I is a heat problem, your components are getting too hot!!!
When booting enter the bios, with del key etc...
Then navigate to the hardware health section/tab, Check the Temps on CPU and North Bridge, Should be no warmer than 30-35 degrees Cen. The PC may need a service!!!! Is there lots of dust over the heat sinks, Dust should be cleaned out.
Hope this helps, please let me know.

Thanks

I am going to upgrade ram to 1 gb. can i use ddr2 1 gb ram to upgrade .motherboard is microstar model ms-6526 ver: 2 . present ram is ddr1 400 MHz, 512 MB

If your computer has two RAM slots on the motherboard, i would recommend trying it. The computer will run on the 512MB stick alone and just not recognise the other stick. And if it works it works.

I have searced for support documentation and came up with none for the original MS-6526

I run my original version MS-6526 on a 512MB PC2300 (DDR1) and a 512MB PC3200 (DDR1) and it runs just fine for games and videos.

Personally I would recommend trying the DDR2 first and if that fails, return the card and get a DDR1 card. They are expensive, but at least they work.

I wonder, can the MSI MS-6577 motherboard support an intel Pentium 4 processing chip on it. It has an intel Celeron chip at present, so I would like to upgrade, if I can. Perry.

Yes, but only to a Northwood one: max 3.06 GHz ,max 533MHz FSB

NEED TO CHANGE MY BIOS SO MY NEW GRAPHICS CARD WILL LOAD INSTEAD OF THE ONBOARD ONE BUT I DONT KNOW WHICH SETTING TO CHANG

Hello

In that way no need to change the BIOS settings, you can install a new graphics card directly. Once you are already installed the new graphics card you need to install also the driver so that it will work properly. Connect your monitor cord to the new installed graphics card. Now you can enjoy using your computer with the new installed graphics card.

Help

Most download type programs have a download button that when pressed starts the download.
A screen will pop up asking "what do you want to do" or similar
choose "Save" and choose the directory to save it to
I could write 3 pages of Instructions of HOW TO.
But follow the above instructions and read what each screen says and you should be OK.
