Hello. I received a Compaq Presario 1620, needed to do a "hard reset". The machine came on completely. I began to run a "defrag", closed the machine while it ran, and now the monitor will not work. External monitor works fine (F+F2), system is running, but how do I get the LCD monitor display back? The F+F2 does not bring it back up..

CFFL lamps dead, or its inverter, 99% on CCFL tubes. bad.
all screens this old do that, they have short life...
why not upgrade , go to used PC store get any PC there, 2010 or newer, that has no CCFL (has LED back lamps)
and a future. best is one with W7 COA sticker on bottom.

XP aND vista ARE DEAD OS now, not safe at all on the internet
nor does PnP work now, at MS.com
why even mess with old tubby CCFL laptops?

SOURCE: Hello. I received a Compaq Presario 1620, needed

There are a few things that come to mind:

  1. Turn off the laptop and leave it off for 5 minutes- then restart it (with the external monitor unplugged). Check to see if you have your video back.
  2. Unplug the monitor, then hit the hotkeys again to switch back and forth between inputs- does the video show up?
  3. There could be a loose wiring/connection issue between screen and the rest of the laptop. Sometimes fiddling around with opening and closing the lid will work. Otherwise, you may need to open the laptop to check the connection between the two (not recommended if you are not good with fiddling around inside computers), or taking it to a tech who can do it for you.
Hope these answers help.

Boot up to slow

Hi ladurisjames...

Your computer sounds like it is loaded with "junk"
Lets start by doing a disc cleaning, then a defrag of the hard drive, and then get rid of unwanted pictures, programs, etc.that you never use anymore from your computer.
Last resort will be a System Restore.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------1...Disc cleaning...Click on Start>All Programs>Accessories>System Tools> Disc Cleanup
2. Defrag the Hard Drive...Click on Start>All Programs>Accessories>System Tools>Disc Defragmenter.
3...Delete any unused programs,files,pictures...etc.
4. Final resort: System Restore...this will restore your computer to a time when it was operating good, you have to pick the date when it was running good....Click Start>All Programs>Accessories>System Tools>System Restore
After you have completed the above your computer should run faster.

Replaced the hard drive for a Compaq Presario CQ60-420US, upon starting the computer received the error "no bootable device".

First make sure you didn't leave a usb key inserted into the laptop. If not, go into the BIOS and verify that the hard drive is being seen by the laptop. Some BIOS require you to run a detect so it can properly identify the new hardware. You should also verify the boot order while you are in there just to make sure the hard drive is selected as a bootable drive.

Can I replace a Compaq PRESARIO motherboard with a faster one having more power?

Most motherboards, including the newer Compaqs, have a certain number of identical mounting holes. Power supply will most likely be your downfall. Compaq uses 'just enough' power supplies for their units, like 220 watts on some. Your faster motherboard stuffed with memory is going to require a lot more. My quad core wanted 750 watts or better with 4 gigs of ram plus your hard drive(s), DVD/BLU-RAY/CDRW, don't forget your GPU on your faster Video Card ? The answer is.. Yes, but.. -DellTech1

My computer is very slow. I have Compaq with windows xp.

the first thing to check is your hard drive defrag it, then the startup process, then software that you do not need or use and finally run some anti spyware/virus software.
