My garage door does not open or close consistently. Sometimes it closes about 6 inches before stopping and going back up. Other times, it does not respond at all. There is nothing obstructing the sensors and this happens with both the wall button and car remote button. Thanks! Jana Gregory

SOURCE: My garage door opener doesnt close all the way.

The motor is probably either stalling because the door is too stiff, or you have a beam break detector that is being triggered when the door is halfway down.

SOURCE: Remote does not open or close garage door; inside button flashes

What has happened is that you electric eyes are blocked or have gone out. The eyes are at the garage door about a foot of the ground on both sides. There should be a red or green light on one of them. If not some thing is blocking the beam that goes across the door. It is a safety beam so kids can nt get hurt when the door is coming down. If the beam is broke the door will go back up.

SOURCE: The garage door works when it wants to.

You have a problem with the safety eyes. Make sure a light is on on both eyes. If not, realign until both lights come on.

SOURCE: Chamberlain Garage Door Opener will not close door

It is most likly your sensors You should not have to mess with your force settings but I can help you with your sensors assume you have checked to make sure there both looking at each other. First close the door so you can see them better. Tap each one of the sensors to see if any of the lights are flickering. if your then you need to tight them up and try again. Also when its dusk or night close your garage door and look at the lights see if one of the tracks is shaking sensor. If not check the wires make sure there is not staple or cuts in them. Then last thing you can check see if your door is hitting the back of the sensor mount it does happen. Also remove and ropes or handles you have fromt eh buttom of the door. That should take care of the problem. Make another post if your still having problems

Door will onlly open or close inches at a time when weather is above 60 degrees

Check on the control box - there will be turn switch to adjust the load sensor. Turn it slightly to any direction and try the door. If the problem worsen turn it in the opposite direction until the door function correctly. Remember load sensing is a safety mechanism to sense when something is in the way of an opening or closing door and will stop movement before injury or damage occur. It is however sometimes set to sensitive resulting in the door stopping for no apparent reason. It should be set to such a level that the door will stop when held back by hand.

My Craftsman garage door will not close, only a few inches at a time

have a problem which returns every year when outdoor temperatures drop close to freezing. garage door will open only a few inches, then stops. I can close it and try opening it again... same result. After five or six such attempts it typically will open. Interestingly, when I push the switch button mounted on the interior wall of my garage and keep it pushed, the door will open, until I release the button at which point it stops opening.

I have a 6 year old craftsman 1/2 HP model139.53985D garage door opener. Sometimes it open/closes fine - other times it opens or closes 6 inches at a time and stops. Springs are fine, worm gear is fine -...

Generally when the door is closing any problem will cause the door to reverse to the open position and stop. This is designed into it. You say your opener just stops when going up or down. This makes me think there is a bad connection somewhere and you are simply losing power. If this is so you should notice that all the small lights that are normally on go out. If this only occurs when the door is going up you may have a bad RPM sensor board. This is a small printed circuit board just in front of the motor.

When closing the door it will act like it is going to close, move about 4 inches then go back up and the light flashes 5 or 6 times and then stops

Check the sensors in the doorway. Make sure they are pointed at one another and the small light on each one is lit and not flickering. Tweak them a little. If you cannot get both lights to come on you have bad sensors.

If the main light flashes 10 times and the door reverses to the open position it is a door sensor problem. Make sure the lights on the sensors are both on and not flickering. Tweak them if necessary. If you cannot get both lights to come on you have bad sensors or the wiring to them.

Remove the cover from the motor unit and check the drive gear. It is a white nylon gear just in front of the motor and may be stripped. If so you will also find what looks like white sawdust inside the motor unit.
