the most common in the US is NTFS. another used in other countrys is PAL. the format is seperated into regions, and they are as follows,
    REGION 1 -- USA, Canada
REGION 2 -- Japan, Europe, South Africa, Middle East, Greenland
REGION 3 -- S.Korea, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Parts of South East Asia
REGION 4 -- Australia, New Zealand, Latin America (including Mexico)
REGION 5 -- Eastern Europe, Russia, India, Africa
    REGION 6 -- China
REGION 7 -- Reserved for Unspecified Special Use
REGION 8 -- Reserved for Cruise Ships, Airlines, etc...
REGION 0 or REGION ALL -- Discs are uncoded and can be played Worldwide, however, PAL discs must be played in a PAL-compatible unit and NTSC discs must be played in an NTSC-compatible unit.

you can use MAGICdvdRIPPER softwareon your computer, it works with NTSC, and PAL formats and vice versa.

Denon Dvd-2910 only displays black and white on the tv screen

    Hello,

this is not a serious problem. It just has to do with visual compatibility.

Change the DVD display to Pal or NTSC and set that of the TV to Auto or pal.

You might find the PAL/NTSC on the DVD remote, or on the button of the DVD. If it is not there, then Check display settings of the DVD.

As for the TV, Change to Auto or Pal from display settings.

    Take care.

DVD Player NTSC / PAL inter-compatibility

    Hi,

    Appreciate the direct "Ask Me".

Emerson brand is not readily available in my country and therefore we have limited exposure to their various products. Although from what I was made to understand, more often than not, Emerson units are specifically manufactured for the US market and therefore would have limited or no multi region capability. Sorry. Although normally, the NTSC/PAL feature (if ever available) would be clearly marked in the box or in the manual or as a sticker on the unit itself.

Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information. Good luck and kind regards. Thank you for using FixYa.

    Only black and white

If you are playing different region dvds, they can be of different color formats also
(US = NTSC, Europe = PAL). If your television is not multi-format then non-compatible
DVDs will play black and white. The solution is to purchase a mutli-format TV (accepts
    both PAL and NTSC formats)

    PAL problem

    Hi!

The DVD player you have is only compatible with NTSC TV. There is no way of changing that to PAL.

It is compatible though with PAL discs. It will convert the video signal of a PAL disc to NTSC format.
