On one side of the toaster one element burns a lot hotter than the other 3 almost like it is taking power away from the other 3 elements. Replaced the main contact switch witch looked suspect but still have the same problem. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for the intelligent answer, if i understand you correctly and the elements act as resistors all being equal I should be able to check them in place without removing them with an ohm meter. Any idea what the reading should be? I am an owner operator of a small Bar

You can get a service and repair manual form the above link.
The only way that something like that could happen was if the wiring or switching was faulty. You see an element is simply a Big Resistor/Resistance, that gets hot when electricity is passed through it, the amount of heat is a function of the resistance and voltage/current as opposed to resistance, the less resistance and More Voltage and current the hotter something will get. to a mathematical point which it cannot go beyond.
Now all the elements in the any toaster are all the same resistance, and as such, can only get so Hot, and use so much energy. So they should be all the same...
Now if as you suspect, one element is "taking power away from the other 3 elements" (sic)
Well now at first glance everyone would say Oh NO WAY.. But in fact.... WAY.. This is indeed possible, and I have seen it myself. Here's how it can happen.
What can happen is an Element can have it's element winding wires touch together, (Often caused by people using a fork or a knife to get something out of the toaster) well, usually, they just Blow the wires apart, but occasionally then they Fuse them together, (Sometimes they can and do spontaneously touch, as the wires sag with heat and age) Now when they do this, guess what, the resistance of that Element goes DOWN, which means the Current will rise, as the Voltage is constant, and Now this Element WILL BE and Appear to be in fact Hotter than the "Other 3".. and while not exactly "Taking the power away" it is dispersed in a Non-linear fashion due to ONE elements resistance being Lower will glow hotter than the rest.
The Fix, well replace that element.. ya will be good to go..
Also stop putting forks and knifes into the toaster, as this is usually what does it...

The element that burns hotter is a bad element and it will be going out soon, it is losing it's resistance and drawing more current.

It will be fairly low reading , but you can compare it to the others.

Only the side elements are working on the toaster. The middle elements which would toast one side of a slice of bread are not working. Is it possible to repair/replace the middle elements?

Maybe. Unplug the toaster and remove the bottom plate as you would for cleaning. look for the wires connected to the middle elements and see if one has become disconnected or broken. If one or more of the connections to the middle element is a quick disconnect type (click link for a picture),
https://s16-us2.ixquick.com/cgi-bin/serveimage?url=http%3A%2F%2Fts4.mm.bing.net%2Fth%3Fid%3DJN.EnzjOARZwnQZZjF7oGU2Dw%26pid%3D15.1%26f%3D1&sp=5dc5e8fde9f2f3462b6483c20bb42f01 then inspect it for overheating, oxidation or corrosion. You may be able to clean it up with a Scotch-brite metal polishing pad.

On my toaster, the connections to the heater elements are metal strips riveted to tabs from the element assemblies. One strip is riveted to the power neutral; the other has a quick disconnect tab for a wire from the thermostat. A loose or broken rivet could be the problem, but do not use an aluminum pop rivet to repair it. It can't take the heat, even if you could find one small enough.

I've seen toaster heater elements evaporate over the years - they get a hot spot, which burns off metal, making it thinner and hotter until finally there's nothing left there. At that point the element is gone. I suppose if you could find nichrome ribbon wire of the same width and thickness as the original, you could rebuild the heating element plate, but it would be a delicate task because the mica insulating material is fragile. It's probably more practical to scavenge a working heater assembly from another toaster of similar design, if the electrical connections are serviceable with the tools you have.

Unless this is a very fancy unit, it's probably cheaper and easier to scrap it out and replace the whole thing.

My Oster 2-slice toaster only toasts on side of the bread' do I need to replace an element ?

You definitely don't have the "bagel" button pressed, right? If it is in bagel mode, it only uses the heating elements on one side.

Toaster no longer heats. Can I purchase the heating element and install myself?

mcdevito75 here, Chances are the heating elements are soldered in on the toaster and may take special tools to fix, if the heating elements sre burned out, maybe better to get another toaster.

Inherited a Dualit Vario 3 Toaster without instructions

Inside your toaster there are six heating element plates four in the center and one in left end and one in right end.
Just switch on the toaster without any bread at maximum time and visualy inspect to see which side is becoming red and which not. Then you need to replace the element plates you see that they don't become red.
Remember that the two in center are the same called "CENTER" and the other two on ends are the same called "END"
They can easily be removed if you remove the bottom panel.
Good Luck

The centre element in my 4 slice model has gone. Can this be replaced?

Don't know if you can get the heating element as separate part. But, this can probably be repaired. It's likely either a burned connection/connector or the heating element is broken.

Bad connectors can be replaced, the heating element can be just twisted back together where it is broken.

Slow to heat Haier Convection Oven

you are correct . it is the convection . the fan blows the air around and away from the elements ,when that is happening the elements can never get hot enough to glow , as the oven gets hotter and at some point the air is so hot even with it blowing the elements will start to get red ... this is good because todays elements are thin and cheep and melt easy so the fan keeps the heat away from them and the elements last longer ...... if this answer helped please rate it a 3 or 4 stars .this high rate will help keep me in the paid answer department ... thank you

Only toast one side of the bread

The other side that isn't toasting has an open element. Usually, the good side will burn twice as hot, and may have stressed that element. You might want to replace both in that slot. make sure you check the voltage rating plate. 208 and 240 volt toasters use different elements.
I just posted the procedure to replace elements, in a similar post here.

Why will my Elements not turn on?

If you definitely have power at the elements, then if they are not heating they must be damaged - just check there is no cutout or safety device after the point you are testing for power. My guess is that new elements will solve the problem Please post again if you need info on getting/fitting replacements http://www.toastmastercorp.com/PDFs/Specs/toasters/FM128.pdf This link gives contact details etc. at the bottom. Hope this helps :)
